PC Build Troubleshooting Help after Failed BIOS Update

Hi all, Was just going to throw this one out there as I believe we've tried everything.

New PC build which was able to boot into BIOS prior to the update. During the update however, the PC froze at 82% for more than an hour. Which we thought our only course of action is to restart it. However now the CPU light is a solid red.

Troubleshooting steps we've tried:

  1. Unfortunately the MB we picked doesn't have the ability to manually flash it.
  2. Done a CMOS reset by removing the battery for about 10 minutes.
  3. Tried booting without GPU and 1 RAM stick plugged in. Issue persists

Open to suggestions on anything else we can try, or is most likely the MB bricked?

Does this MB require a previous gen CPU installed first to perform bios update?

    • Good question. I don't believe you would be able to get to the bios update section at all if the CPU wasn't supported.

    • I think you might be onto something here! The board happened to be on vH0 which didn't support 14th gen CPUs yet

I feel for you OP, I bricked one of my boards a couple weeks ago during a bios update as well. I don't think you've done anything wrong, even manufactures will say the bios update is not recommended.

I can't see any mention of a backup bios on this msi board, so you might be SOL unfortunately.

If the board is under warranty, try to RMA it and say it doesn't post.

Yeah we just got everything just last week so its all brand new! RMA might be the way

  • I'd look at this as being a major failure under the Australian Consumer Guarantee. I'd demand a replacement or refund.

MSI use Flashback for recovery. No need to go into bios, as it may not be available.

Rather than repeat instructions, look for a Flashback guide. (little red button on rear)

You will need a USB, Fat32

Download the bios, be aware of the bios you are on, as upgrading to the latest may require an intermediate bios.(Read the change log!)

Extract and rename the file as instructed.

Start with PSU off. Turn on PSU ONLY Insert usb in the specific port only.

Turn off, press flash button. Light should start flashing. Make coffee, twice. The guide should tell you what the lights mean. Expect 20+ min.

  • If a bios update fails unless you have 2 bios chips on the board, then the board becomes bricked, the only fix is to send it in for warranty.
