Makita Drill Driver 18V

Got some light renos coming up and looking to "suggest" a Makita drill deal to my wife. Happy for second hand too as I'll generally be a lighter user. Brand/platform to match the gardening tools and associated batteries I have presently.

Looking for cheapest or biggest bang for buck (i.e. a set w/batteries)

Delivery would be to 4077 (if factoring)

Best I've found to date:

Thank you in advance!

That top one looks battered. Don't get that.

Spend the extra and get something like this https://www.totaltools.com.au/109011-makita-18v-1-5ah-drill-…

Sorry, but this is a horrible kit to recommend as it comes with 1.5Ah batteries. Batteries smaller than 3Ah only have 1 row of cells (bigger ones have 2 rows connected in parallel), which is bad from a voltage balancing perspective. Their life will be shorter than the big ones. Also the drill is not brushless.

It's best to get the brushless kit that comes with a single 5Ah battery for the same price.

This is a very old, non-brushless model and the ones you've found look pretty beaten up. I don't think there's much life left in them. There are much better deals (some brand new) on Gumtree/Facebook market all the time like this one:

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/web/listing/power-tools/132952671…

If you want a charger and battery too, I would shell out a little more and buy a new brushless kit:

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-18-brushless-hammer-drive…

Another way to make your own "deal" is to buy a combo kit and sell the batteries, charger, and the impact driver. You'll probably end up getting the drill for free:

    • Thanks for the suggestions - I'm leaning toward the one with that 3amp battery as currently my 1amp isn't making the whole trek around the yard with the whipper snipper - bonus!

      • I wouldn't buy it, but it's up to you.

I would simply buy the combo kit for $400, then sell 1 of the batteries (~$75), the impact driver ($120-150), and the charger (~$50). You'll end up paying the same amount ($100-150) and get a brand new, brushless, newer drill with 5 year warranty, plus a brand new 4Ah battery.

      • Please don't buy that trash from Cashies. They're literally held together with zip-ties. Makita gear is (generally) pretty hard wearing, but I guarantee these will be absolutely cooked in even more ways that you can't see in the photo.

I'm not sure what you mean by light renos, but I'm guessing if your budget for a drill is $50 - they must be very light! In all seriousness, if you're just doing average, day-to-day home-owner DIY stuff - Ozito brushless from Bunnings will be totally fine, cheaper, and have a no-questions-asked warranty.

  • I know you want to match in with batteries you already got but honestly maybe consider something in ozito if you don’t want to outlay a huge amount

    • Yeah when I hit send I was thinking I don't really know why I am being brand loyal here… oops

Realistically with what you have suggested your budget suggests that you don't want to/are unable to spend too much. If you are talking light use and don't require a lot of power I would suggest something like on Ozito 18v kit from Bunnings. Sure they will not have the power of a high end brand but you are generally getting a higher capacity battery with charger and tool all in one and they have a great warranty of 5 years on the tool and 3 on battery and charger. I also like the suggestion of bio in the comments of outlaying more for a combo kit and selling off a battery and charger if you don't need them but can be risky as you may be outlaying money you don't have and there is no guarantee that you will sell the bits that you don't need. Have you thought of suggesting to your wife that you would like a gift voucher for somewhere like Bunnings and then you can keep an eye out for a good deal or clearance model to buy at a later stage at a cheaper price. If you are going for something like an Ozito keep an eye out for a deal on a brushless model.
