Mains Powered Motorised Window Roller Blinds

Hello OzBargain Family,
This black Friday, I'm looking to keep the heat out of our home via these blinds.

The front of the home is nearly North facing. It's a duplex. We're on the left. At sunrise to about midday, the house on the right takes the gentle heat. Then when it starts to become hot, the sun's entire journey down burns into the left hand side of the home. This has three bedrooms and the hall.

Awnings aren't suitable because there's a narrow passage on the side of the home, between the fence, enough for two bins next to each other. Awnings would protrude and take up the limited space.

I would like find some blinds that look like roller garage doors, with the motor built into it. It MUST HAVE smart control capabilities (aka an app).
Integration with a smart assistant would be a big bonus (Google home only).
Bigger bonus would be utilisation with an existing hub+app I have for the garage called Neo Smart Blinds.

As a new first home owner, I know very little of these things, but google shows me they exist. I just don't know what pricing is a bargain and what isn't.

TLDR : Motorised blinds for four rooms that get the brunt of the sun in summer.

  • If it's North facing the eves should keep most of the direct sunlight out during summer.

    • I was thinking the same. But they aren't usually motorised. Plus, in bad weather, I'm worried about winds.

      • They don't need to be motorised as it is the sun that changes position between the seasons.

        • Ah , I understand what you mean. Unfortunately, it's not sufficient. It just burns through the glass.
I'll try and post a photo today.

    do you mean roller shutters?

    • Yes, like a garage door? But a mini version of it.

  • It sounds like you are after Motorised Roller Shutters, yes, they do exist. It would be getting the right configuration/installer who has one that connects to a Smart Solution.

Most installers now will not install manual roller shutters and insist that they are all 240V mains power controlled. Apparently, this is due to installation limitations, and 240V is easier but obviously costly.

Contact a few local roller shutter / blind installers and have a chat with them.

Just googled it. Yes, exactly, Motorised Roller Shutters!
      Will do. Thanks.

  • Ok so, I recently had motorised roller shutters installed at my house so I think I can weigh in on this for you. I opted to go via Modern Roller Shutters and the most popular installation choice isn't even to have hard wired controllers anymore. What my shutters have is a module that has an internal battery that you slot into the receptacle for each shutter you want to use and it's powered by that. Supposedly the majority of people are choosing that these days as it is saving on the extra installation costs which (they say) come with needing to have each separate shutter hard wired in.

So far, I have experienced no downsides with using them and the quality of both the shutters and installation is great. 10/10 can recommend. No idea about any sort of "Smart" connectivity or control. I personally tend to avoid that stuff as it tends to be way more of a headache than it's worth.

    • Awesome, thanks mate.
So you have to recharge the batteries every few weeks I take it?
How much was it for how many windows?

      • So you have to recharge the batteries every few weeks I take it?

Well, what I do is keep one of the modules plugged into power (the receptacles are made in such a way that you can route the charger for the module into them. Pretty tidy tbh) so it's just always charged and then for whatever shutters I want to open/close etc, I just walk over with the controller, slot it into the receptacle and use it.

How much was it for how many windows?

I had 3 large windows done and a more "normal" side window and the supply and install was a touch over 6K. Not cheap, but it's all Aussie made/built so I guess pay a premium for it.

Sounds like they need solar panels on them somewhere.

Sorry, where do you get the power from? Is it a hole in your wall, that is a power socket from INSIDE the home, that leads to OUTSIDE to the battery? I guess I'll have to see a picture to fully understand this.

This sounds like a lot of work. If I close, I will close all 3/4 at once, for the entire day. It's just too much work for me to use 3-4 controllers and slotting it into power. Or I think I just misunderstood you. Thanks in advance @Devastator0

          6k!? <gulp>

          • @Lord Ra:

Sorry, where do you get the power from? Is it a hole in your wall, that is a power socket from INSIDE the home, that leads to OUTSIDE to the battery? I guess I'll have to see a picture to fully understand this.

Yeah, so you have a power cable going from an internal socket that then connects to the remote control module via a barrel plug. The controller module receptacle itself is wired through the wall to the outside unit and that's how it provides power to it when you slot the controller module into it.

            • @Devastator0: @Devastator0 got a quote for three windows.
              Approx 134*170cms.
$4,500 with smart functionality. I'll use an existing garage hub.

What do you think of that? Motorised, they'll bring an electrician.

        Yep, that's them.

        • Do you think I can use a Zigbee Hub or a Home Assistant to control these blinds?

  • for smart connectivity, get the installer to use this controller: https://shop.meross.com/products/meross-smart-roller-shutter…

    • I have a Neo Blinds controller, that's used for my garage. So ideally, I don't want to have another controller to worry about. The NeoBlinds control works really well and is 100% reliable.
Thanks for the recommendation, I see this brand come up every now and then on OzBee.

    • Can I somehow use a Zigbee Hub (that I don't have yet) to do this? To save getting ANOTHER hub?

      • no hub required. it has a wifi connection on each controller. hook it up to your home wifi and you can use the meross app and also hk/gh/aa

        • Sorry mate, what is hk/gh/aa?
          I'm super new to this!

@Lord Ra: Apple homekit/ Google home/ Amazon Alexa

    • @follow where does this get it's power from? Will I need someone to cut a hole in my wall to fix this? Will I need 3 of these for three rooms?

      • +1

yes, it's placed on the wall and yes each shutter has its own

      • +1

        mains wired
