Do Tram Drivers Have a Emergency Button That Alerts Police

Made me think.

Just witnessed an incident of a 6.4ft tall and well built man drunk of his head causing a huge scene in the tram and then approached the driver and stood there shouting and slurring out whatever he was saying.

Do these drivers have a duress alarm then can just press without offenders noticing? I know for certain if that was me in the driver's situation, I'd be hesitant to call 000 in fear of situation escalating.

    Sounds like you're drunk OP.

    • Maybe also "the well built man".

  • Yes this was posted without proof reading. So i may as well be drunk.

  • Never heard of this.
I imagine They would have some duress code to their comms operator though, who would then dial through to 000

Nope. They speak to the Comms/Dispatch and they call 000.

There's always ranting and raving lunatics on public transport. They have a captive audience and seem to dribble similar crap to the cookers that post on here.

    • Why I want to say this is a over generalisation, they do tend to gravitate towards others despite their innately anti-social actions…. When I feel shitty I avoid people, not these people though…..

I don’t know what tram this is, I assume Melbourne. But in Sydney yes they have a hidden foot pedal duress alarm.

There is a silent alert button but you'd only use it if someone actually managed to get into the cab as it holds the radio channel open and the control room can listen to what's happening in the cab. The rest of the time you just use the normal radio to call the control room and they contact the police/ambulance/fire brigade. There is a button on the radio that will give your call priority so if there are other calls at the same time the control room will answer yours first though.

If anyone is under the illusion the driver is going to get out and help you you are dreaming lol. Our procedure says not to get out of the cab for situations where passengers are violent or disruptive as it just puts the driver at risk and it isn't part of their job to protect people. Also if the driver is injured the tram is stuck there with nobody able to move it to a safer location or anything. Being a white knight is a good way to get killed.

    • I see still miles better than driver himself dialling 000
