Help with Multi-Screen WFH Setup

Hi,

Hoping to get some suggestions from people that might have had to solve for similar situations.

I have a work laptop that I connect to a Dell P2419HC via single USB-C for both power and video. I just bought a new HP Omen 27q to replace the old Dell screen but have found that I would prefer to maintain a three screen setup (Laptop, Dell, HP) since getting the new screen.

I am hoping to have the above setup and only be required to plug in a single USB-C to my laptop.

I have tried daisy chaining the two screens via a displayport cable and then plugging my Dell into the laptop via USB-C but it only outputs 1080p and 60hz to the HP which is capable of 1440p and 144hz. I have also tried using a USB-C hub and connecting both monitors to it, but the one I have doesn't push both video and power from the Dell screen.

What would be the best and easiest way to achieve single cable into laptop with this setup? I'm happy to consider buying another hub, if that is your recommended approach can you please maybe link me a product?

Thanks!

Get a USB C Hub that has multiple Display Outputs. You probably want something like this.

UGreen is often a popular OzBargain Choice.

    • Are there ones that can do the higher refresh rates that OP is after?

      • Most likely, but would be more $$$.

      • The Revodock can do dual 4K60. It has more than enough bandwidth to do one monitor 1080p60 and one 1440p144.

    • Thank you for this - does "power passthrough" mean that I wouldn't need a separate charger and could just connect Dell USB-C (carrying power and video) and HDMI from HP into this hub without anything else?

      • The passthrough port can only take power. You can try this instead.

        1) Dell connect via HDMI. Make sure your monitor output selection is via HDMI.
        2) HP connect via HDMI
        3) Plug in the USB C from Dell into the Passthrough to supply power.

Then you connect the USB C from the Revodock to your laptop. Im assuming the Dell monitor can only supply 65W power. The passthrough has a 10 to 15w inefficiency. So it will only output 50W of power. Your laptop will show an error message during start up that power is insufficient on first boot, all you need to do is click ignore error. I found that 50W is enough to drive an office laptop.

  • Use a few of these at work.
Dell WD19S USB-C Dock (130W PD & Upto Triple Display Support)

  • maybe a Targus DOCK180, seems to be pretty cheap ex-corporate units available - just check they have at least the power cable.

  • Dell USB docks can be had for pretty good prices on eBay.
