Good Deal on a Quality Camera Tripod

Hi OzBargainers.
I’m seeking a good deal on a good quality tripod for still photography for a gift.
My olden days knowledge says manfrotto was probably the leading brand, but maybe there are good newer options.
Light weight is desirable, but so is durability. It doesn’t need to be carried on a 4 day hike, but will be taken on location.
The recipient is a keen amateur, who has been exploring all sorts of photography, including long exposure, portraits, wildlife, Astro etc. so versatility is desirable.

Has anybody seen any good deals for a tripod they can recommend?
Or any ones to be avoided?

    There's a few Manfrotto's on steep discount

https://www.amazon.com.au/Manfrotto-Befree-XPRO-Aluminium-Tr… <— the carbon fibre one here is particularly cheap
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Manfrotto-Advanced-MKBFRTA4BK-BH-P…
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Manfrotto-MKELMII4BK-BH-Lightweigh…

..their RRP is a bit dodgy, but they're still significantly cheaper than other stores locally

Love my manfrotto… but it is heavy… weight is something to really consider

Ok i posted the direct aliexpress link to the tripod in my unpublished reply above but it seems ozb does not allow it. I cbf typing my answer all out again.

Coman Zero F38 off aliexpress seller "Coman official store"
    Should be around $154usd shipped.

    • Thanks. Do you have one/have used one?

Yep. Bought one for around $175usd a year ago. Previously used a lightweight sirui? travel tripod which didn't hold up to the winds in Albany for long exposure shots. Previous to that a manfrotto carbon fibre 4 section tripod which was sturdy enough but at around 1.9kg (incl head) was too heavy to carry around all day when travelling. Also cost me about 3x the price (factoring in head bought separately) of the Coman.

You can read some more comments from people who've used it in these previous posts. Just keep in mind that some comments refer to the "Zero Y" which is a different head and locking mechanism vs the F38.

        • didn't hold up to the winds in Albany

          Not much does 😂

  • Any feedback on K&F concepts as a ‘generic’ brand tripod?
I have a few of their adaptors and what not that are good quality.

When I last brought a tripod I used this (https://thecentercolumn.com/tripod-reviews/) as a reference. It's pretty scientific in terms of the review process but the idea is to find tripods that provide the most stability.

I ended up buying one of the Leofoto carbon fibre tripods which are Chinese made and have no problems with it.

  • Have you considered a JOBY GorillaPod?

    • I used one of those when they came out. I think the more traditional style will suit him better.

Get a Manfrotto, expensive yes but it’s worth it.

I got a heavy one so it can cantilever my d700 and 14-24mm f2.8 combo 500mm out without tipping.

It’s over 15 years old now and still works as new.

  • Thanks all, you’ve given me some good leads.
