Rant - Platypus Shoes Rewards Program

Just wanted to rant about the Platypus Shoes rewards program and see if anyone else has had the same issue.

Their rewards program when you sign up clearly states that you will receive $20 off your next purchase if you sign up.

However as soon as you sign up you only receive 100 points (200 points = $20 off). You are actually required to make an additional $100 purchase full price ($1 = 1 point) to get $20 off as promised.

To me this is clear false advertising - as there is no way for your "next purchase" to have $20 off without paying full price first.

Usually this wouldn't bother me as its a pretty minor thing but multiple agents in the live chat/email at Platypus insist it's not false advertising when I asked why I don't have a $20 off coupon and were generally pretty rude about it. I've reported this to NSW Fair Trading/ACCC as false advertising.

Rant over.

I see where you're coming from, as the top banner can be quite misleading, but it doesn't specifically state you'll get $20 straight away for signing up. Reading through the page suggests you can build up to $20 off, which is what they probably mean.

It does clarify the below points on the same page:-

Earn 1 point for every $1 spent, on each purchase. Receive a $20 reward* for every 200 points earned.
For every dollar spent, you will earn a point! Once you have 200 points, you'll receive a $20 reward towards your next purchase.

    • Thanks for that. I see what you mean. My issue is the top banner says “Sign up below and get $20 off your next order”. There is no possible way to achieve $20 off your next order. You have to place a full order first of $100 or more and then place another order. Maybe I am being pedantic but the wording on the page is definitely incorrect.

Does my wallet need to register to vote?

      Vote with your wallet

My wallet refuses to vote for Albo.

  • Some Coles entrance has a sign "flybuys $10 off your shop".

    • Not the same thing though - it would be more akin to saying "Sign up to flybuys to save $10 off your next shop" and they only give you $5 when you sign up.

i think maybe they are saying someone may not read the fine print, and assume oh scan my flybys, get $10 off, but you need to redeem points to get the money off.

even then, yeah not the same as your op

Report it to the ACCC. Australia has some pretty strict rules around being misleading with advertising.

      The don't do anything.

        • Some do, but for most complaints, they don't do anything…
Often, they do not even respond to a an enquiry.

          • @jv: Sure, it's not going to be a golden bullet. But can confirm they aren't ignoring everyone. Been involved with a them before, albeit on the other end.
