Also take advantage of credit card bonuses when purchasing gift cards. $3,000 spend in 90 days etc.

    • Do we really get bonuses off GC purchases? I am new to land down under. Planning to get my CC soon.

      • Any eligible purchase such as gift card purchases from stores. Even if you just skip GC alone and purchase what you're looking to buy directly with credit cards it'll benefit you more. Some of the bonuses could be worth ~$600+

      • Did you find out how ?

  • Why Harvey Norman? Hardly Normal is not OzB's favourite merchant.

      Cant speak for OP but:

      • they have higher end brands
      • price match, including inter state (relevant for SA/WA where places like Bing Lee dont exist)
      • very often have stock either in store or state

      🤷‍♀️

      • To be fair you should balance your points with the downsides of buying from them as well and I don't mean the philosophical one about putting money into Gerry's pocket which is reason enough for people here.

I'm hardly an expert but people should take note that while all the stores are named Harvey Norman the vast majority are owned by franchisees who run things their way so the experience will vary from store to store. They may not even automatically give you the advertised pricing on specials. You are dealing with small companies and all that it means. I suppose you can complain to HN headquarters but it's not like they won't also be looking out for the franchisee themselves. I don't know HN specifics but some franchisors care more about customer experience than the others.

HN stores like to capture your personal information when you buy things but to be fair I haven't received any spam. (It was free with a trade-in so forgive me)

If you're trying to assert ACL rights I reckon you would have a better experience at a brand that doesn't make use of the franchise model like JB Hi Fi, Myer or David Joines.

The business of the Hardly Normal group is mostly the income they get from selling the franchises, whatever else they can skim off the franchisee and property investment. A failed franchise is not entirely bad news for a franchisor as they can sell the franchise again.

      • Ready stock
      • They matched the lowest price and extended the offer until year end. HN will honour even boxing day sale prices in case further price drops. I am sure other merchants are doing that as well.

Price matching to get a sale is common with some retailers willing to make greater efforts to do so. Providing price protection after a purchase is less common. As I've said the Harvey Norman stores are independently run so things can be very different between stores. You might well get exceptional pricing if deal directly with the franchise owner. Just don't let whatever your past experience with HN influence you unless you are certain the individual you previously dealt with or their superiors will honour the promises made to you.

  • Why would you want to give Gerry $6k?

    Hi,

Have a careful look at what you are proposing to buy.

HVN (aka Hardly Normal) sometimes have Instant Cashbacks or Bonus HVN Gift Card over a certain spend.
So don't be in a hurry to buy, if you can wait, wait.

Be very careful with buying anything at this time of the year.
Ask them "Do you have physical stock?" or "What is the lead time on delivery?"

Also there are currently 117 items that offer Cashback by Redemption, so you might spend X $, but look out
for Redemption opportunities, and make note of the Dates, Terms and Conditions.
Do not send the Original Receipts.

    • Hardly Normal did offer HVN GCs. These days prices are similar in all the stores due to pricematch. Cashback/Bonus GCs become the deciding factors in choosing from where to buy.

there are pitfalls in using gift cards, if your purchase needs to be refunded (faulty, can't be fulfilled), you will be stuck with $6k in HN gift cards
