Sydney tools it is then. https://sydneytools.com.au/product/metabo-au68204450-18v-40a…

  • How does this brand compare with the likes of Ryobi, Makita, AEG ? I

    • +3

It is a pro brand. Up there with Makita, Milwaukee, Dewalt etc.

    • Metabo cordless drill lasted 20 years. Absolutely smashed for the first 5 years.

      Craps over Makita and DeWalt.

    • I have a Metabo drill, the one with the side handle. It’s really good quality, made in Germany. It’s definitely nicer than my Dewalt. I have a Bosch blue impact driver (with the red locking ring) and it’s also very nice, in between the others.

  • Yea , they were really good German Tool Company before the brand was sold.
The impact is made in china, but is good quality and may last as long as any other trade quality brand these days.
Drill is metal chuck made in Germany, not their best and not their worst model.
Charger made somewhere in backwoods Europe and batteries assembled in Hungary from decent Korean cells I believe.
Outside of the core tools like the higher end HD grinders, drills, impacts ect , everything is Chinese made and the quality is no longer there.
Probably as good as any other general trade grade tools but no longer up there with the best European brands like Hilti ect , they’d be on par with Bosch except they don’t have the different colour to differentiate their lower tier tools.
Their range of specific tools is also limited in the higher end stuff .
Good if you’re a boilermaker but not so for carpenters, cabinetmakers etc.
They do have a 6year warranty if you register the tool online .
Still if you need a decent starter kit for work you couldn’t go wrong with these,
    and what a bargain.

If you can pick up their drills and grinders from 20 years ago in good nic,
they will outlast your grandkids and then some.

Batteries also work in Hitachi and hikoki 18V tools

Pity these don't support 36v as well otherwise would've bought.

    • No, the battery alliance that Metabo is a part of makes the batteries compatible with a bunch of high end and specialist European brands .

Thanks OP. Bought from Sydney Tools - still in stock.
Anyone got any deals for drill bits / other necessities with these? Just want to do some home renos.

Thanks OP. My dad needs a new drill and wants a 5ah battery. Forwarded to him.

Commenting for future reference: Only one service centre and it’s Melbourne. So warranty is practical only if you’re in Melbourne. No warranty certificate issued but site says to send warranty cert plus receipt to get warranty service. If I’d known I would not have bought this. Fyi impact driver made in China but hammer drill made in Germany, charger Vietnam, batteries assembled Hungary.

I believe they do a warranty certificate when you register the tool online for the 6 year warranty.
Otherwise I’d be returning to the retailer if you ever have a problem, after all that’s who you bought it from, so they can deal with it .
Most reps will just replace tools new for old.
When I had an issue with a tool the rep drove out to my place, replaced the tool, gave me a site radio, hat and stubby cooler for my trouble.
      So I might be biased,
and I used to own one of their multi-rotary hammer drills,
so I might have good reason to be.
