Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy

Just watched this documentary and thought that we are all part of the problem and OzBargain is also an "accomplice" that exacerbate the problem.

No. I'm shocked. I thought we were all saving money.

OP waited 5 years to post this.

    • Yeah, WTF is that about. Weird sleeper account?

  • +3

I'm waiting for the documentary called Think Before You Buy: Exercising Some Self Control.

The idea that shoppers are victims is weird. Just make better decisions.

    Oh noes! Anyway…

  • Excellent doco.

I’m on ozbargain just for the traffic fines and no insurance posts

  • I am on here for the car crash posts where OP denies that they are in the wrong and want confirmation that they are.

A big discount on something you don't need is still something you don't need.

    • +2

See, poor mindset. Focusing on what you don’t need instead of what you got - which is a big discount. If you don’t buy it you don’t have it, but no one can ever take that discount away from you.

Until there is a bigger discount next week of course

      • And we don't know what we'll need :)

    • What do we really need?

The irony of watching a consumerist doco on Netflix.

  • Slow down! I can't keep up with the conspiracies

I'm waiting for the release of "Useful Threads: How make a Coherent Post rather than Random Thoughts That Go Nowhere"

  • Ironic! coming from Netflix the streaming conspiracy

  • I watched it. Thanks for the great summary OP!

Yes, the message is important. The packaging is awful and borderline cringe. It may be a difficult one to watch. Hopefully you're at the very least somewhat aware of these issues anyway.

This covers a decent range of things. If you've watch Louis Rossmann, War on Waste you've likely seen some of these issues already.

We have interviews with various people in tech, old sporting good CEO being interviewed and feeling guilty over their actions.

Here are some topics loosely organised into themes:

    Amazon

    • Experiments to maximise sales (eg: they may compare the results of changing the colour of a button)
    • Treatment of Amazon employees
    • Environmental impacts of Amazon
    • Lack of action by Amazon
    • The want to encourage consumerism with minimal thought

    Repair

    • Interviews iFixit CEO
    • Planned obsolescence - gives lightbulbs as an example. IIRC, I watched this vid on the topic and it was mildly interesting
    • Lack of repairability
    • Blocking of repairing - eg: C&Ds to iFixit
    • Lack of thought around recycling

    Recycling

    • Greenwashing
    • Plastics
    • Dodgy e-waste recyclers

    Fast Fashion

    • Lack of quality - eg clothes that die after a few washes
    • Microplastics
    • Dumping in Ghana
    • Lack of thought by consumers

    Corps

    • The typical expectation of growth

And, random bits of advice are:

    • Buy Less
    • Pushing of responsibility onto conumsers
    • Think through purchases
