My teenage son has the following specs on his gaming computer - wants to upgrade his graphics card for Xmas
i7-7700
16gb ddr4
1tb SSD
500gb HDD
AMD RX580 8gb version.
What would you suggest ?? He was looking at a RTX4060 , would that be a decent upgrade from the existing one he has ??

Depends, unless you go low 1080p setting most current games won't be pushing the CPU anywhere to be bottlenecked. I have an i7-6700k with RTX3070 which is easily 25% more powerful than RTX4060 and most of the time GPU is the limitations. I do game on 1440p but even with DLSS it's not like these cards are pushing amazing FPS on high settings and above.
A RTX 4060 will be a very reasonable budget-conscious upgrade.
As already mentioned, there will be a CPU bottleneck, but it's still worth upgrade and the CPU can be upgraded down the line. Unless you go to a 9th gen Intel, you'll need to upgrade the motherboard and potentially ram as well.

Should be enough to push double the frames in most games, if not a little more, or the equivalent horsepower of giving you a good 1440P experience vs 1080P. Both cards only have 8Gb of memory though so the 4060Ti or 4070 are more future proofed options but they come at additional cost. You don't want to get too far ahead of the rest of the components with the graphics card unless upgrades elsewhere will follow at some point and you'll carry over the card. Nvidia cards are definitely the way to go though as they've tended to skip ahead of the competition in terms of features and support but I wouldn't want less than a 4060 either so you are probably on the right track.

I would probably do a whole system upgrade with those specs. Plenty of deals on here. I'd probably look at something from Nebula PC.
You don't need the latest and greatest to play current titles. If OP's kid isn't planning to play Cyberpunk with psycho RT an upgrade to a 4060 will still result in a very serviceable gaming PC.
