Bad PayPal Experience

I recently had to file a dispute on PayPal after a seller failed to ship an item and stopped responding.

I provided all the evidence for my case, and the seller was given 10 days to reply. Despite their lack of response, PayPal still decided in the seller's favour. Is AI making these decisions? Because it makes no sense to me as to why they'd decide in the seller's favour, especially considering the seller didn't even respond to the dispute.

Although I eventually got my money back, the experience left a sour taste. While support can reopen the case for review, it would mean waiting another 10 days for the seller to respond, plus 5 more days for PayPal to make a decision.

Going forward, I plan to skip PayPal entirely and rely on credit card disputes instead, as that’s ultimately how I recovered my funds.

I never have problem with PayPal or seller didn't send the goods. Always check the reviews before purchase and also see how many sold for the goods. In AliExpress or Temu for example, if only 5 sold, I'll check same/similar goods from other sellers with much higher sales volume like hundreds sold for example. Usually I sort the view based on Low to high price first and then see how many sold and check the reviews. Hope this helps next time before purchasing goods online.

    • Yeah, I understand. I was purchasing through a private seller. But I thought using PayPal would give me a level of protection due to the dispute process - but it's just a long useless process.

      • As in Facebook marketplace?

        • Depop. But through the platform it goes directly to the seller's PayPal.

          • @Pikaloo: I didn't realise Depop exists. I am surprised people use it in Australia. Is it very popular and I was ignorant?

  • Who did you buy from? Was the purchase PayPal Buyer Protection eligible?

PayPal is stacked pretty heavily in the buyer's favour these days isn't it? Not like 20 years ago.

    • Not in my case….

how did you get your money back if PP found in sellers favour?

    • I raised a credit card dispute and got a credit for my money in 2-3 days after the dispute failed. I then also contacted PayPal support and asked them how it was possible they closed it in the seller's favour given the seller never responded and they re-opened it and I had to wait through the dispute process again.

Say goodbye to your Paypal account if you did a chargeback

Definitely AI. I recently had to contact support for a Nokia (HMD) product and despite specific issue, none of the responses related to the item, or the problem. 3 responses after 3 attempts and it had to be AI. My last request was accompanied by that very question. "Am I getting responses from a person or from AI?".
    And???
No response. It seems that is the very question that blows the AI's mind.

Any service using call centres or multiple humans in a support capacity will go this way, and most will be halfway there, now. Them dole queues are gunna get longer. And worse.

I also had a bad experience. I received an item that was broken. The seller refunded the money to PayPal to someone with same name as me. They looked into it and said that the refund was fine. I complained again and the next person was quite diligent and could see what had happened . He said they would be in contact with within the next 24 hours. I received an automated response saying the case was closed. It was for an item just under $100.

I've been screwed over by Paypal 2 or 3 times, both as the buyer and seller to a total value of about $800 worth of stuff. I will forever avoid them as much as I can the rest of my life.

  • I provided all the evidence for my case, and the seller was given 10 days to reply. Despite their lack of response, PayPal still decided in the seller's favour.

    That's a pretty rare event….

PayPal or ebay generally side with the buyer regardless

    • That's why I think it was AI. ~2 hours after it was up to PayPal to decide it was closed in the seller's favour. When it was re-opened by support PayPal took 3-5 days to decide and no extra information was added, it was just re-opened.
