BigW Mandating Mobile on Account, and No Way around It?

bigw.com.au is now mandating having a mobile number on your account, and any attempt to either access your account, shop, or even logout pushes you to https://www.bigw.com.au/send-mobile-verification

They have a voice call option (entering a landline) but it gives an error when inputting the code received by voice call. I have no interest in giving my mobile number to BigW/WW, (or any corporate verification service really) too many corporate hacks with data leaks and SIM cloning etc.

Anyone aware of anyway around it, or even to be able to logout so can browse the BigW site pages?

Yeah.. pay for a second number. That would make your life easier it seems.

Doesn't resolve corporate hacks or SIM cloning

Security lip service is there for them not you. Take charge of your own security and expect data breaches to be normal.

Agree, and no problem with that. I just want to delete my account, which you now cannot do without providing a mobile and validating it.
I have no interest in purchasing from an Org that has no interest is proper/effective/valid security of personal information either.

        Read their privacy policy.

Try emailing them and getting them to do it for you without you having to sign in. If they try to get you to use your mobile to login and do it from their website, try telling them you don't have a mobile xD

      • if you have no interest in purchasing from them … then what interest do you have in wanting to browse their site ???

if you are that seriously concerned - then ask to delete your a/c from their system … it's not that hard.
(have personally done prior when I had a "glitch" with my a/c and had to create a whole new one).

even logout pushes you to https://www.bigw.com.au/send-mobile-verification

If that isn't a case of user error, that is a bug worth reporting to BigW.

Sounds like Big W have screwed up their implementation somehow.

Anyone aware of anyway around it, or even to be able to logout so can browse the BigW site pages?

Tried clearing cookies or using incognito mode? It won't know who you are anymore.

That said, there's no reason not to give Big W your mobile number. It's not secret information and I can tell you right now, le evil hackers already have your name, address and phone number. Having your account hijacked usually requires a bit of social engineering. I'd also look into what security measures your telco has in place. If you're on Telstra, you can help prevent porting fraud by setting up 2FA in the telstra app (it will required approval in there before a move happens).

There no way OP is giving his mobile number to his Telco provider.

Go with the flow or ditch them. Not that hard.If you're worried about your ID or data, too late. If you're worried beyond that , then perhaps you're Jason Bourne?

  • The easiest solution is the $10.00, 365 day Amaysim SIM, inbound calls and SMS only
Or there are other options out there.

  • Thanks to this thread, now all the retailers know you won't buy from Big W, and you won't be able to price match any of Big W's prices.
