“Apple Watch for Your Kids” No Major Telco, Only BetterRoaming?

I have been researching the “Apple Watch for Your Kids” feature to determine whether it meets my needs and performs as advertised. However, my impression is that this feature is very limited in Australia.

The main reason for my conclusion is that Australia’s major telcos do not offer dedicated plans for the “Apple Watch for Your Kids” feature. Instead, they only support linking the watch to your existing mobile plan. This means that calls and messages made from the watch appear as if they are coming from your own mobile number, not your child’s. Essentially, the watch becomes an extension of your identity, not your child’s.

The “Apple Watch for Your Kids” feature is marketed as allowing the watch to function as your child’s standalone identity. Communication from the watch would display your child’s name, and tracking would associate with their identity rather than yours. For this functionality to work, the watch requires a separate data plan. In Australia, the only provider offering such plans is a company called BetterRoaming. However, reviews for BetterRoaming are generally poor, with users frequently reporting connectivity issues—which defeats the purpose of using the device as a reliable communication tool.

This is what I’ve discovered so far. I’d love to hear from others about their experiences with the “Apple Watch for Your Kids” feature or any alternative methods for maintaining communication with children.

My goal is to stay connected with my kids and keep track of them without giving them a smartphone, which they would likely end up using to play web browser games.

  • there is child specific smart watches that you can get (eg; SpaceTalk)

  • Why not do BetterRoaming's 7-day free trial?

    • That means I would have spent money on an Apple Watch SE Cellular. If Better Roaming's 7-day free trial turns out bad then I am stuck with an expensive paper weight.

If you buy from Apple you get a 14 day no questions asked return policy.
In fact, they do a longer one between now and Christmas, you can return by the 8th January
        https://www.apple.com/au/shop/help/returns_refund

I've used this before a 4-5 times and it truly is no questions asked.

So it sounds like it's a risk free trial from both sides

        • Yes, that is the benefit of buying from Apple, so easy to deal with. Unfortunately Apple do not offer deals, not even their lower model Apple Watch SE.

On the other hand JBHiFi offer $100 off on Apple Watch SE cellular. They will only accept return if unopen.

@beefmaster: Try get Apple to price match JB?
Apple price match up to 10% off apparently, so I guess you'd just have to weigh the risks

          • @beefmaster: Try with apple, then return and buy with JB if you like it.

  • Not yet in position to buy. Haven’t done research fully. But watching the Garmin Bounce. Has tracking and voice messages maybe.

I've been betterroaming customer for a couple of months by giving my kid apple watch series 6 GPS edition.
    I'm paying $10.99/month

When I checked it a couple of months ago, neither optus/Vodafone/Telstra offer an eSim for apple watch.

AFAIK they are running out of Optus network; there's an occassional connectivity issue; but in general okay, I can use "Find my" to see where my kid is located too (and get the notification from "Find My" when they arrived/leave school).

The other thing AFAIK Apple Cash is not in AU as yet; otherwise it'll be a nice feature where they can 'tap and pay' with their watch too

    • You can use Apple Pay in Australia on an Apple Watch. Unless I'm missing something specific using this service?

      • Apple Pay can only be used by kids age 13 and above.

Apple Cash is ability to give cash to the kids under 18yo.
Unfortunately, Apple Cash is not available in AUS as yet…

  • I'm a strong samsung/android fan and even I'm considering the apple watch/betterroaming option for my kid. Even if the fitbit ace lte comes to Australia, it and the garmin bounce are way to restricted in my opinion, and the $11 monthly fee for betterroaming makes it a better value proposition even accounting for stupid apple prices.

My friend did the same for his kid and hasn't had troubles.

No pay option sucks though. Fitbit ace lte has that.

  • A friend recommended a Woolworths eSIM.

Is there a reason this won’t work for a kids Apple Watch?

I’m trying to work out what to get my kids for Xmas and was leaning towards Apple as I think it would last longer and I don’t like how Spacetalk charge extra to use some of their features.

    • You'll need a separate iPhone to pair to an Apple Watch on a Woolworths eSIM. The alternative is to use the Family Setup option with BetterRoaming.

  • We have a couple of Family Setup Apple Watches and it works well. Our eldest just had a bank account opened with a debit card but we can't add it to the watch as it's not supported.
