Traffic Fines in NSW

Have you received one in the mail?

A while back I got pulled over for a traffic offence. Minor matter, guilty, but is irrelevant to the question.

The police officer took my licence went back to his car, did some stuff and came back and said the fine would be in the mail in 'a couple of weeks'.

I waited for a few weeks and finally went and looked at my Service NSW App. and there was a fine in the fines section. Still no mailed version arrived. No apparent notification of it being received by email (I went and searched incl spam) or on the app. Our address hasn't changed for years and have received mail previously.

Have you received a fine in the mail lately, or just on the app? Did you get a notification? Makes me wonder if I got pinged by a camera if I didn't actively look for the fine id end up being past due and get an additional fee.

  • In NSW. Fixed speed camera - got a fine delivered by mail. I'd guess about a year ago.

One day, Monte Carlo… One day I will visit you…

  • My brother got done by a red light speed camera last December and that came in the mail

    • You forgot the "my brother"

      • Nope. My record is squeaky clean over 17 years despite being pulled over a few times šŸ«  The day I cop a demerit point and get fined via a letter, I'm going to frame the letter.

You'd likely get away with a caution as long as it's not too serious.

The whole process was done online and only took a few minutes.

          • @ihfree: He ran a red light; no leniency (rightfully so)

@kerfuffle: I meant for you with your clear driving record.

I know someone who ran a red light with an otherwise clear driving record. Wasted their one get out of jail free card.

              • @ihfree: The other waste is the school zone - no leniency there either from memory. Did 50 in a usual 60 zone, but at 9:28am (two minutes before the 40 school zone time ended)

Just speculating here but did you check some box in the app for all communications to be via the app only?

Wut? They have a 'please fine me hard' app that people actually install?

    • Possibly, but i checked the settings and there didnt appear to be an option for that, or for notifications.

    Yes they are a thing

    no, have you?

Wonder now more, you will get late fees for not paying your fine!

  • There's this amazing thing called google.

    https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/safety_and_prevention/policingā€¦.

Since 2016 you get a choice of traffic ticket my mail or email when it results from face to face contact with a police officer. So a camera offence will still be sent by mail.

So when the officer told me it would come in the mail and it didnt?

      • Its the same whether its sent by mail or email. If they say they sent it, and you never received it, you're screwed. Because legally you are deemed to have received it, and you can't prove you didn't.

Well, you probably can't, but my email provider keeps a record, and will provide a statement as to whether an email from a specified email address was received on or about a specified date. I don't expect my postie provides a similar service.

        • If the officer had said it was coming via email, id have kept an eye out. He said it would be in the mail and we regularly check the mail. It hasnt arrived by mail. I have searched emails and not found anything.

Even more frustrating is that it is in the fines box in the app, but no notifications. No icon in the app either and doesnt appear to be a way to set it.

  • Got flashed when turning right while the light was yellow turning to red. No mail for 5 months now (touch wood). I was saved by 0.00001sec maybe.

But have you checked the app?

      • +1

        Nothing as of today.

  • Just on the app, offence was 3 days ago on Monday 17th, didn't check the app until I saw your post!

  • If they can do it from the car, it's almost definitely recorded but if they have to fill out the form back at the station, maybe he/she forgot, couldn't be bothered, or had a change of heart.

You can try just calling the local station for where you got the infringement. They should be able to trace it based on your details and the date. They would probably want the officers name, but it's not normal for you to have that. They might be cranky about it, but you have a right to know.
