Fire TV - Must Have Apps

Got a fire stick 4K max this week, first time user for tv app based android device looking to set up over weekend.

Already running a Plex server and a Kayo subscrition - i believe these are available in vanilla app store?

Looking at Stremio/RD in near future, also IPTV setup and ad free/adblocked youtube + free to air catch up services…can anyone recommend good guides for sideloading/setup etc?

May setup emulators down the track…but pretty much every pc in the home has them already.

What apps are you guys running to achieve these ends…and any other 'must haves'?

Not really interested in setting up Kodi on top of Plex…

cheers

EDIT:

a nice succint list from below, credit to user ihfree

Plex - Magic is more in the accompanying server. Possibly a collection of rips or maybe running a *arr stack
Stremio/RD - if that's your thing - search the linked site.
Moonlight - Game streaming
Steam Link - Moonlight likely better
Retroarch - Emulation
VLC - for those cases where you want to play from a device
Streaming service apps - Netflix, Prime, AppleTV, Paramount+, Curiosity Stream, Youtube
Catch up apps - iView, SBS, 7,9,10 or whatever they are.
VPN - Some sort of VPN to get around geoblocks

Plenty of guides on the Internet and reddit. Do we need to regurgitate them here?

      as i said:
…can anyone recommend good guides for sideloading/setup etc?

      • Ok. I recommend the Internet and specifically reddit.

thanks for going the extra mile mate, and for your whack-a-mole reply!

          • -2

@QuickToThePointless: Do you want me to add the links that will appear on the front page of your Google search?

          • -3

            @QuickToThePointless: Dont be so lazy

I had no trouble finding the required information when i wanted to do this.

Do you need to be spoon fed?

Now be a good little boy and follow the appropriate suggestion given to you.

            HINT: Try searching on "Google"

@HeWhoKnows: Huh, I'm surprised that you use Google. Much of your post history suggests that you don't.

Should be the Standard reply for almost all requests for assistance posted on OB.

Thank you for some common sense MS paint

      OMG
Look what i found when I googled OP's post tilte !!!!

      https://www.firesticktricks.com/amazon-fire-stick-apps.html

That was incredibly difficult to find.
And it was the TOP search result.

      BOOM!

Then a little further down this one:

      https://troypoint.com/firestick-apps/

Great advice MS Paint as always

Does OP require that I regurgitate everything here?

Fire TV - Must Have Apps

Yes it must, otherwise it would be of no use.

To continue the pedantry here, the title was in fact a statement, not a question.

Not for the first time, you are posting the answer to a question no one asked!

      • title was in fact a statement

Yes, and I agreed with the statement.

        • okay, could read read either way i guess, but no real need for affirmation on the obvious in that context here..if post title was 'Bar - Must have drinks' you'd just comment the same I suppose?

          • @QuickToThePointless:

'Bar - Must have drinks' you'd just comment the same I suppose?

            Not during lent.

For the ability to passthrough TrueHD and DTS HD lossless audio in Plex you'll need to install Kodi and then PlexMod4Kodi

    Edit: Just saw this

Not really interested in setting up Kodi on top of Plex…

Sideload smarttube. Don't login to your real google account though, cause if they decide to ban people for ad blocking you don't want that on your real account.

You download the apk, put it on usb or upload with an app, put stick into dev mode, install it. Future app updates are within the GUI.

    OP avatar very accurate.

    Great idea.
I want to know some must haves as well

Obviously, there's much more you can do but this would cover most people -

Plex - Magic is more in the accompanying server. Possibly a collection of rips or maybe running a *arr stack
Stremio/RD - if that's your thing - search the linked site.
      Moonlight - Game streaming

      • sincere thanks for your reply…a great list - i will put in the OP.

Do you have any knowledge on IPTV / EPG implementation in AU?

have had experience with Kodi / Matt Huismann setup on PC for Binge/Kayo/Samsung/Pluto channels…would be nice to integrate something like that with the FTA channels EPG in FireTV environment…cheers

        • No, I don't use FTA at all. There is no point in being tied to a schedule; advertising is awful, and the program-to-content ratio is not great.

hey mate, despite the sh*tposting her I have gleaned some useful info for Stremio and SmartTube.

Problem with this space in researching is there are too many apps, of various degrees or relevance to Australian market, and an overwhelming push for VPN sales

This is exacerbated for those unfamiliar with Android/Google store app ecosystem, like me.

If anyone asks similar questions in future I will now be able to help them, rather than belittling them with the basic comments here about being lazy and stupid!

      have a great day!

You can also install Kodi from a third party if that is of any use.

  • FYI good thread on IPTV at Whirlpool here - M3U IPTV looks likely as a free EPG solution for FTA channels

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/988lkr6n#r73352887

  • FYI - ES File Explorer works well to transfer files from PC to Firestick - just turn off on app purchases so you dotn accidentally subscribe to monthly plan, you dont need it!
