Feedback on New Build Please Ryzen 7 9800X3D & RTX 4070 TI S

Can I please have some feedback on my wife's first build.

All parts are due to arrive by the start of next week. I have reused the GPU, PSU, and SSD. I have checked that PCPart picker has found the cheapest prices available to Australia.

    It looks very good.

    • I had one piece of feedback:

the Gigabyte B650M Aorus Elite Ax, ASRock B650M RS Pro or ASRock B650M PG Riptide will work best in the A3 case with a thick GPU
the board you picked is a second slot board and put the GPU close to the floor of the A3 case
has nothing to do with aesthetics, its about cooling and being able to use thicker GPU's

Wondering if i should care to spend the extra $100 on an imported board?

      • put the GPU close to the floor

At least when you get the inevitable GPU sag it won't have far to bottom out.

Do you really need an $830 CPU? Seems quite unlikely.

Wanted the 7800x3d but can claim 24 months of price drops on my purchases so figure why not and claim the depreciation on a 9800x3d

Also the 7800x3d aren't great value at the moment. No sales

      • please do share who offers the 24 months of price drops cover?

        • Coles Mastercard.
          Its long gone now unfortunately

Lol, this is almost the exact build I'm aiming towards. CPU, cooler (but RGB), memory (36 GB, 6000, CL30) and case (wood front, nice) the same!

    Main differences to me are:
    - I'm going for MSI B650M GAMING PLUS WIFI Motherboard, with USB C, BT5.3 and being whiter as the only differences I can spot for $7 more. Your pick is good if you don't care for those.
    - Memory I'm planning for an SN850X, and possibly another cheap M.2 if I want more storage. You're existing one is great.
    - I bought a Corsair SF850L for $160 on the deal from Scorptec, as that will fit fine. Your pick is great (slightly nicer and much shorter), and cause you've already got it, all good.
    - I'm going to use my existing 3070 until next GPUs come out.
    - I'll add some fans but haven't thought much about that part yet!

      Good shout.

I think I considered that mobo but I went the extra x16 pcie slot over the extra x1 pcie slot in yours.

I didn't really consider the Bluetooth and usb c but maybe that would.be more functional over another 16x pcie 🤔

      The sf850L looks good.

Unfortunately I'm just reusing my old fractal and corsair 3 pin fans. No fun

Seems this fellah agrees with you

A cheaper alternative is the B650M-HDV/M.2
      https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B650M-HDVM.2/index.asp
8+2+1 VRM and a decent cooler should be fine with the 9800X3D (Bios tweak regarding VRM temps needed though so it doesn't throttle at 70 degrees)
Edit: Holy hand grenades! The entry-level B650M-HDV/M.2 costs the same as B650M Aorus Elite Ax! 125 USD turned into 185 USD.
In that case these are some options that cost a bit more, but have better power delivery than the MSI board which didn't get great reviews for its 4+2+1 VRM
      https://www.techspot.com/review/2633-amd-b650-motherboards/
      https://au.pcpartpicker.com/products/compare/cRQcCJ,6fYmP6,9…
Gigabyte B650M GAMING X AX Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard
Gigabyte B650M GAMING PLUS WF Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard

I wasn't worrying about VRM stuff but maybe I should

Don't worry about fans in this case - I currently have it with a 4080. The GPU intakes directly from underneath, and the CPU fan blows through the tower heatsink straight to rear exhaust. I've got 1x exhaust fan also but I don't even know if I really need that. The whole thing is mesh which is excellent for heat dissipation. During high gaming load my GPU temps sit around 60c and CPU around 50c, it's great!

I'm currently looking to upgrade / platform change to 9800X3D and from what I've noticed looking into mobos is that the MSI seem to have issues with long boot times due to ram training issues. Probably a small risk but I'm staying away from the MSI boards and currently looking at either this one

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/6fYmP6/gigabyte-b650m-ga…

    or this one

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/fFzhP6/gigabyte-b650m-ao…

depending on what black friday delivers.

Also I'm not sure if the MSI have a bios flashback feature which you'll need, unless you have an older AM5 CPU lying around

    • I did notice the flashback thing on PCpartpicker and paid no attention. I may run into issues hey?

      • +1

Yeah so these boards are all made pre-9800X3D release so they'll need a bios update to work with that CPU. With the bios flashback feature you can update the bios without a CPU, GPU or RAM installed. If it doesn't have that feature then you'll need a compatible CPU, GPU and RAM to boot into bios to manually update it before your 9800X3D will work.

        • Looks like i'm safe, it does have the flashback feature. But now I am considering getting a better board.

    How about my build:

    CPU: Intel 80286 (20 Mhz)
    Ram: 1 x 256 KB
    Hard disk: 20 MB
    Floppy disk drive: Yes

    • Computer 👍

    • That is my first IBM AT Compatible Personal Computing Device!
I had an 80287 co-processor as well so I was stoked!
Cost me $2500 in 1988 I think from memory. I saved all year for it.

Yes, that's what they cost back then. My Dad got one in 1990, and didn't know what to do with it, so I was the only one who used it. It came packed with about 30 games, and I was so excited to try all the games (e.g. 1986 version of X-fighter). Was the first time I was able to play games at home.
