Preowned 60gb ps3 $729 in EB GAMES! supports backwards compatibility.

21

It might seem pretty expensive for a preowned ps3, but the 60gb ps3 supports backwards compatibility, and preowned 60gb ps3's can sell upto $1200 on eBay!!!
the 40gb and and the new 80gb cant play ps2 games, due to sony stripping off the emotion engine to make it the console cheaper to manufacture.

But first, check availibilty, because many people dont usually trade in their ps3s…

  • Looks like it depends which 60GB model you get as to whether or not it has the Emotion engine:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

According to the Wikipedia page, if you have a 20GB or 60GB model that is NTSC version (we have PAL in Australia), then it will have the Emotion Engine. None of the Pal versions seem to have the Emotion Engine… the 60GB PAL version has software (emulation) only.

    • pretty much a given EB will only have PAL units too.

  • The PAL PS3 only ever had the software emulation for backwards compatibility, and from what i have read, the emualtion only works for some PS2 games, not all.

So it's alot to be paying for a second-hand PS3, given that a PS2 console is less than 200 bucks now, and the PS3 is less than 600.

  • It is old tech. Not worth that much regardless of scarcity and as mentioned, the emulation only works for some PS2 games.

  • Buy yourself a new PS2 for $129 and save yourself $600

    • Yeah best to buy them separately I think. Given the PS3 on a good day s $650 you will pay more all up but you will walk away with a game for the PS3. Given the second hand one doesn't seem to come with a game, assuming you want a PS3 game then you have to factor that into the costs.

As above you also have to consider that Pal PS3's only have software emulation which isn't as robust as the hardware emulation that the NTSC PS3's had so for compatibility sakes you may as well get a PS2 for peace of mind.

All in all I think it'll cost roughly the same once you allow for a single game purchase and the PS2 will be more reliable when it comes to compatibility.

  • hmm…. u guys make a point…. i was actually thinking of getting a preowned one… thinking it was a good idea, but there was a sale for the 80gb, for $599… so i bought that instead with an extra game…… but if this sale never occured… i would actually get the preowned 60gb….

    • Okay, so where can you get a PS3 for $599 ? Perhaps you need another bargain entry…..

      Edit:
      - Okay, there was that expired offer last weekend at Domayne?

      • Is there any current offers anywhere at $599 … ?
  • You may be buying someone elses problem, eb trade-ins was a way a lot of people got rid of a intermitent ring of death xbox360, if you really really need PS2 compatibility buy a preowned PS2 for $70. This is a rip off plain and simple, selling more for than what they sold new, limited warranty and a version 1 console. $599 and a get a brand new one with full sony warranty, DS3 controller + game, I really couldn't give a toss for PS2 compatibility or a memory card reader on a console.
    RIP OFF!!
