AmEx Platinum Card. Eligibility for Bonus Points

Have an upcoming international trip which may involve transits to various airports and international accommodation bookings. Looking to get lounge access for my wife and kids (cardholder + guest, x 2)

I was looking at whether 1 year of the Amex Platinum Card may actually be useful.

Looking at this offer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/829833

275,000 Amex points would certainly help to cover the exorbitant annual fee.

However I do have an Amex Essential card currently with my wife as an additional cardholder.

Is there any way to get around the issue with already being an Amex cardholder, i.e. not being eligible for the signup points. Would my wife as a cardholder not be considered as a previous cardholder?

Additional card holders aren’t considered as the primary card holders. Therefore they do qualify for the bonus points when they get the new card under their own name as a PRIMARY CARD HOLDER.

  • But I take it no way around me actually applying to get the signup points?

The points would be under her name/account

    • The primary card holder can't have held an Amex for 18 months so you can't get the sign up points.

You could refer your wife perhaps (check your referral link if the platinum shows up) and get those points and she could still get a sign up bonus (might not be 275k).
