LEGO Display Cabinet Recommendations

Hi everyone,

My two boys need something to display their increasing Lego sets within.

Looking for recommendations on Lego display units, leaning towards glass with lighting.

Found this one but it only has 3 reviews: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/226261457235

Was looking for a large unit, such as the one above in 82x33x161cm (LxWxH)

Was hoping to get something with Black Friday sales, in time for Xmas.

I’m located in VIC but ok to pay for shipping from interstate.

NOTE: My partner is Ikea adverse (after a number of previous purchases broke after a short time) :-/

Thanks!

  • IKEA?

    • That was my first thought, but any budget furniture store probably has bookshelves that would do the job.

@ritasaurus For a huge range of options, look at Shelving Shop https://shelvingshop.com.au, but you'll need a lot of patience to narrow it down.

      • I just know IKEA have many cabinets/bookcases that can have glass doors and lighting fixtures added in.

      • Thank you for your suggestion

It did not look like any of the items on that website were enclosed units, which is what we would prefer, but thanks :-)

    • Thank you for the suggestion - I have edited my post to advise that my partner is Ikea adverse :-p

      • Wise partner! I hate the place, too. It seems to be mostly males affected by the absence of windows. They also overload the senses in a way that makes you lose track of time (cost me an overstay in the parking lost last trip to walk out only with things we bought for other people). As a method of survival, I usually retire to the café and drink lousy coffee in preference to wandering through the sensory deprivation tank loaded with MDF and plastic.

That said, you won't find a future antique in Ikea, but sometimes you find useful things.

        • The absence of windows sounds like the same psychology behind the design of casinos… just the level of lighting that varies.

  • Note a lot of sets are quite tall and will exceed that cabinet’s shelf height of 30cm. Also note the cabinet is grey, not black, if that matters. Lastly, there’s no specs on load-bearing capacity, and in images they only have hot toy type PVC figures which are very light.

Ikea sell far more shelves than any mob. If it broke, maybe you didn't assemble it correctly or loaded it in some unexpected way.

My recommendation is Billy shelves with glass doors - shelves can adjust to take bigger vertical sets (e.g. Voltron) and smaller sets (e.g. cars). Can also buy extra shelves. These last decades and still going strong.

    • Agree. I have 3 of the Billy bookshelves and they have been loaded with books for a decade and are still in good condition.

  • Maybe look into secondhand shop display cases.

  • I got a Dystler Bookcase with 2 Doors & Adjustable Shelves from Amazon, they sometimes coe on sale.
Lighting works well, even the sensor mode. Felt like building an ikea tbh, but looks nice.

  • If you're hard enough on your furniture that Ikea stuff doesn't last long I'd suggest all the budget stuff is completely unsuitable as Ikea tends to be the top of the quality pile at a budget price and you look at custom or workshop/garage storage solutions instead. A lot of garage stuff now looks like regularly furniture as a lot of cashed up people like to have their garages looking like just another room of the house.

  • If you don't mind pre-owned there are always some around on Gumtree and Marketplace. Aldi sells them annually as a special buy but I have no idea when.

  • Random ebay stuff is going to be worse than Ikea. If you dont like Ikea you probably need to shop at a more premium place. Ikea quality seems to be the best out of the budget options in my experience.
