Where Is The Best Value Meat in Sydney?

Hi all, supermarket prices for meat these days is very costly.

Does anyone have recommendations on good quality meat from butchers or wholesalers to the public that represents a substantial saving compared to all the major supermarkets. Preferably within 10km of Sydney CBD.

Cheers

Quality, value and convenience are pretty subjective.
The eastern suburbs of Sydney is an expensive place to live and do business, there is definitely cheaper places and better quality places, but a bit hard to get both at the same place. Supermarkets are definitely a rip off.
    I’d have a look at:
    Costco
    Harris farm
    Vics meats $$$
    Australian meat emporium
    Rodriguez bros
    Craig cook $$$
    Sydney meat market Strathfield
Various Asian butchers, Ashfield, Campsie, Strathfield Burwood etc
    Online bulk delivery sites.

    • This is a good list.

One option is to hunt possums in Hyde Park.

    • Or for a more refined palette, a year's membership to the zoo and aquarium will pay for itself, assuming they restock what you take and you don't get caught.

      • Last I checked, the don't have wagyu cows at Taronga.

      • I also hear insects are a good source of protein, plus they don't add to climate change by farting.

Buy direct from the farmer, usually ~ $15 per dressed kg … Most do delivery free …

    For example: https://www.horizongrazing.com.au/shop/p/beef-whole-carcass

(don't live in Sydney, never ordered from said business, was just the first hit on a google search)

Indeed, read the post SLOWLY …

        Buy 1/4 or 1/2 or whole cow … $14 / kg … not rocket surgery …

Also note, I don't give a shit about Sydney, so I could care less to search for a similar company that I use in SA/NT

(I get a whole grass fed grass finished, butchered cow delivered for $14 per kg dressed - all cuts - not just cherry picked expensive cuts)

The Woolworths I go to don't sell 1/4 or 1/2 or whole cow, I wouldn't want that much either. (Horizon say they are sold out till January anyway.

Just comparing like to like, don't have a cow man.

        • R U OK?

            @jackary: Yeah, perfectly fine ;)

Just dumb people that don't realise things are always cheaper in bulk! Then try to argue a point about a single product :/

Cheap meat is easy to get (I do it every couple of months): BUY IN BULK (not rocket surgery to understand the point) ;)

    • was watching a doco on ABC roughly 2 weeks ago.

sadly … alot of the "direct" farmer options have been closing up over 2024 as there isn't the market for it anymore (don't know about the link you posted - as I'm not in NSW).

      • There is a huge market for it. That is not the problem. It is government policy to harass & make it as difficult as possible for direct farmers & small businesses. They do it through the use of regulations & red tape.

        • ABC doco didn't mention anything about GOV policy.
what they said was basically - there isn't the market for it anymore … the end ppl aren't purchasing "direct from farmer".

@mrdean please do elaborate … as to EXACTLY which GOV policy you refer to.
as mentioned - in ABC doco - they never once talked about GOV intervention.

although, they did say that farmers probably didn't properly market product to end users in proper/traditional ways - as such why was never selling well to begin with.

          • @simplystu: Since you want something easy to read, here's one example: https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2022-06-14/pick-your-own-f…

The ABC has become a government propaganda outlet for the most part.

The government always has a rationale for whatever policy they're implementing. This one they claim, is to make it easier for farmers/businesses. Of course they will say that. It's really about increasing bureaucratic red-tape, increasing regulatory burdens, micromanaging every detail, making it difficult for small operators. But they tell you the opposite.

Have you thought about going vegetarian? I heard soylent green tastes just like meat.

  • Dumpster diving or roadkill - fits in with a Freegan philosophy and best of all it's free.

  • Have a look around kings cross.

I buy from the Australian Meat Emporium in Alexandria.

Probably not the cheapest place but I've never had any sub-quality meat from there and they have some reasonably specials. I got some great Cattleman's cutlets there 2 weeks ago. They were only 100 day grain fed (I prefer grass fed meat) but it was about $35/kg. 2 cutlets were 2.5kg and the dogs enjoyed the bones.

The butcher in the main street of Mascot have always been cheap with average quality meat. Also try Marrickville around the traditional Illawarra Rd/Marrickville Rd area. Get Banh Mi while you are there.

    • @brad1-8tsi - Australian Meat Emporium is highly rated on many Australian based BBQ groups. Their specials are very good value given the quality of the meat.

I get it from Pleased to Meet You in Blacktown. I love their slogan..

"We are pleased to meet you and have the meat to please you."

    • what's their location? they don't seem too googlable.
how do they compare to Wesfresh & SM Marketplace? (if you have been there)

They deliver to your holiday home in Mt Druitt ?¿

    • Can't find them on google either. Help?

It's outside your 10km radius but https://pendlehillmeatmarket.com.au/ is close to the station and usually has excellent prices and decent quality.

    • Yep, just got go on the weekend, too crowded.
Their instore deals don't reflect on the website sadly.

  • Some wholesalers sell direct to the public, Handlers in Rushcutters Bay is excellent. You wouldn't call it cheap, but it's great value for money.

  • What is OP on about?
Meat has come down by over 50% since COVID-19 rip-off prices.

    But otherwise CHICKEN is cheap

Lol. You accidentally replied in the correct location.

      • 😂

  • Costco meat is good quality and worth the price in my view.

  • Buy a fishing line.

  • IGA Habberfield, they sell great meat at best price. Mind you there you need to wait in queue due to high demand and people do wait because they get the best quality all the time.

    • Sounds like they have an in-store butcher?
