Is This 12TB Seagate IronWolf Too Good to Be True?

I'm looking for 12TB replacement for my NAS and found this on eBay for $272.80 which is way lower than other resellers.

Has anyone had experience with this seller? Is there a way to check the legitimacy of this HD if I bought from them?

If you check the sellers feedback, someone has left a negative review for a fake 8TB IronWolf. Does appear too good to be true.

  • Ah thanks. I tried to look for those feedback, but didn't see it due to overwhelming positive reviews. Didn't realise there's a negative feedback filter. Thanks a lot! You've saved me some hassle there.

  • Based in China too

Ah yeah, was on the listing

    Located in: ning bo, China

  • Looks like very ligit specs.

What about East Digital for your HDDs?

They originally started on eBay Aus but now they've got their own store. Everyone (including me) raves about then since they have good prices on both fresh drives and new pulls, and have been extremely reliable.

14Tb WD HC530 for $219 is bloody good

    • Yep. When i (finally) upgraded my nas i will 1001% get my drives from them.

    • Yep go for east digital, many ozbargain members have bought from there multiple times

    • Since I saw them posted over a year ago on here I have been buying 18-22TB drives off them. Haven't had any issues with them. To the OP, don't worry about paying extra for express. Standard delivery comes just as fast.

    • The "New" listings I'd assume have never been used?

  • I have bought five 10 TB drives from that seller, and they are all legit. I have them running in my NAS. When I bought my first drive from them I was indeed sceptical but gave it a shot in case they really were that cheap, and then I received the drive, checked the serial numbers with Seagate, and then bought four more.

    • Is it possible to verify the legitimacy of the HD? The serial numbers could have been copied from a legit Seagate drives?

I suppose that is possible, but the printing on the label looked far too good for a dodgy knockoff. And you can check the SMART information on the drive to check the serial number is the same in hardware as software, and then check the actual size with something like crystaldiskinfo.

  • Re East Digital, are most people buying the sever pulls or Factory ReConditon ? I see they have server pulls, but dont mention usage hours in the listing (due to the high volume they have im guessing)

Most deals and comments I have read are new H reconditioned

  • I just purchased a new NAS and put in dual 8TB Seagate Ironwolf drives. They are way too noisy - like hear them from another room noisy. I should have paid attention when I saw comments about their loudness before I bought them because if I had of realised they were as bad as they are I never would have purchased them.

    • That is weird. I have 3 8TB Ironwolf drives and they are on a NAS below my desk. I don't hear any much noise at all. I've been transferring about 10TB of data for the last 3 days.

      • If they are on carpet that might help, or just being on the floor. Reading about the experiences of others and how they dealt with it after my post the other day I tried shifting the NAS onto a solid surface rather than the cupboard it was sitting on, and also experimented with placing it on a thick atlas covered with a cloth on top of the cupboard and both of those subjectively appeared to reduce the volume by 20~30%.. no longer getting resonant amplification from the hollow space it was sitting on.

Still sounding like a computer from the 90's though and I think definitely louder than they should be. 4x 4Tb solid state drives would have been a great go to over 2x 8TB standard drives I think, but still somewhat of a price difference even with good Black Friday specials going around.
