Motorola G24 vs G54

Hi, I'm looking for a beginner android phone for my teenager.

My son will use it for phone calls, texts, a few small games, watching YouTube, make recordings of his music, etc. It won't be used all day every day, as he also has a laptop. 5G is not important to us, as we live in a regional town (only 82000 people in our LGA) and the only place that has 5G, is inside the hospital.

I bumped into these 2 Motorola phones. Personally, I only use Samsung for myself, but their "budget phones" aren't that cheap and their specs aren't great either.

What are the real noticeable differences (when taking away the 5G requirement) between the Moto G54 and G24? Pricewise there's a big difference, but do you really notice the difference in specs, with everyday use?

Do you use Amaysim by any chance? If so, try to get a $200 voucher from Amaysim and get the Samsung A15 5G for a low price. (If you can't get the voucher from Amaysim and need to buy it from a ozbargain member for $60/80, it will cost you less than $100 total)

    • He has a 1 year sim with amaysim. It's not a plan, it's like a 365 day prepaid account…..

Was his old phone 3G only ? Check the email from Amaysim and see whether they sent you an email with a $200 coupon. If so, you can get a Samsung A15 5g for $19 which has much better screen than G24/54 and way faster than G24!

        • No, no emails at all. His old phone was an iPhone 6. It stopped charging.

          • @Yeah OK: iPhone 6 actually supports VoLTE and still works after shutdown. You can try to chat with Amaysim and see whether they can provide a voucher for a new phone. They "may" provide a voucher.

G24 has 12 nm processor vs G54 with 6 nm processor which is more efficient and less heat on G54. Maybe it doesn't really matter for daily use except heavy gaming maybe not great on both.

G24 has 4 GB RAM vs G54 with 8 GB RAM. Both have RAM Boost feature in the setting that will use internal storage as virtual RAM. RAM boost if enabled is up to 8 GB for G54 vs G24 up to 4 GB? and enabled by default)

G24 has eMMC for internal storage which is slower than G54 with UFS. Not sure how slow for daily use.

G24 has 720p screen resolution if compared with G54 that has 1080p screen resolution. Everyone has different preferences.

G24 has max 90 Hz screen refresh rate vs G54 with max 120 Hz screen refresh rate. I don't play games, so 60 Hz is still good enough for me (longer battery life too). This can be changed in the setting.

G54 has esim (digital sim unlike normal sim card) along with normal sim card slot. Useful for travelling overseas (get free data to use from Ozb deals) or as a backup if there's no signal/problem on the other network. Imagine having Vodafone/Optus + Telstra in 1 phone. This maybe the cheapest phone with esim. G24 doesn't have esim, only normal sim card slot.

The main problem with these Moto phones is major software update maybe only limited to 1 major software update (android 14 on G54, android 15 later on G24). If you prefer more software updates in long term like few years, maybe choose Samsung phone or more newer Moto phones that promise more software updates (more expensive).

For audio recording, maybe try Dolby On: Record audio and music app (install from google play store) to maximise the sound quality. For camera, use gcam mod (Google Camera) to improve photo quality. I reckon G54 camera is great in very low light condition when taking photo of only a lamp in use in the dark. Better details than gcam mod (maybe need deeper setting change). Gcam app can be downloaded from here:

Choose from many on the list under "recent updates".

Short version: I'd recommend the G54 because it won't make you want to throw it at a wall as much as the G24. If you're concerned about the price difference, wait for a sale on the G54.

    eSIM
G54 has 1 eSIM slot, G24 does not. Given that you are in a regional town, you may or may not value that, depending on how often you switch plans and how long it takes for physical SIMs to be posted there.

    CPUs
G24 has a really low end CPU (2 x a75 performance cores from 2017, 6 x a55 efficiency cores, also from 2017). In my view, CPUs this close to the bottom are ewaste as soon as they start being used and should not be put in devices.

G54 has what I would consider an acceptable level of performance that isn't irresponsibly contributing to ewaste. 2 x a78 performance cores from 2020 and 6 a55 efficiency cores (latter is same as G24). If your performance needs are modest, you can use CPUs with this config for quite a few years before it becomes obsolete.

I'd say the G54's CPU is ~3 tiers from the very bottom, a sweet spot between performance and price.

    RAM
G24 does come with 4GB and 8GB RAM variants, but only 4GB of RAM is available in Australia.

The opposite is true for the G54. Only 8GB RAM G54 is available in Australia, other countries may have 4GB variants.

    Storage
Capacity wise, both have 128GB of storage, but the G24 uses eMMC instead of UFS storage.

Short version is that eMMC is considered very low end. Some might even consider it fake or scam solid state storage.

G54 uses UFS storage 3.0 in Europe and 2.2 everywhere else. Far from bleeding edge, but should be acceptable for most people.

    Physical size + screen size
G24 is marginally larger by a few millimetres. Same goes for screen size.

    G24 is 163.5 x 74.5 x 8 mm with a 6.56 inch screen.

    G54 is 161.6 x 73.8 x 8 mm with a 6.5 inch screen.

    Screen resolution
    G24 has a 720p screen. G54 has 1080p.

Some people will scoff at the idea of a 720p display in 2024, but on a pocket sized device, I don't think most people will care that much.

720p has 921 600 pixels and 1080p has 2 073 600, so if you can put up with 720p, you will benefit from having less than half the pixels to power, both from a performance and battery standpoint.

    Charging speed
Both have equal charging speeds (15 watts) and are on the slower side.

Acceptable as long as you're not the sort of person who waits until just before they go out to charge their phone and are capable of planning ahead.

    Battery size
    Both have 5000 mAh batteries.

G24 has a much less efficient CPU and it will be working itself much harder to make up for its lack of performance, but it has a low resolution screen.

G54 has a more efficient CPU (though again, far from bleeding edge), but it has a 1080p screen with more than double the pixel count vs 720p.

    Software updates
Both will only receive software updates for a short period of time before having support dropped.

Their successors will have many more years of software support. Motorola changed their software support policy to be longer in the generation after these 2 phones.

    Cameras
Both have cameras that can be generously described as "mediocre".

If you have modest standards and give them the best chance by shooting in good lighting (i.e. in daylight), then it will be okay.

If you think there are magical algorithms that will make everything look amazing even if you shoot in terrible lighting conditions on a night out with friends, you'll be bitterly disappointed.

In general, budget cameras do okay vs flagships in good lighting and really show their flaws in bad lighting.

    G54!

    I have a G54 and a G85. I'd suggest G54 over G85.

Anything lower spec is not worth it.

OP if you are looking towards G24, try check G04 too. Ain't that much different in spec, but slightly cheaper. Both has 2 sim & 1 microsd slots. G54 has only 1 sim 1 msd & an esim.
