  • Bought for $50 on eBay last year

    • Was there an ozbargain post on this?

    • +2

so what’s your experience after a year? any issue with it?

      • +7

I have 2 of these. been using it for 2+ years. Flawlessly working with homekit to open and close with sunrise/sunset automation

        Highly recommend

        • Is it noisy?

          • @nightelves: A little bit, not overly. Could imagine weight of the blind would play a difference?

        • How’s the battery life on this with your usage?

          • +1

@frugaI: I have a few of these around my house on both small vs big blinds. Need to charge every 2-3 months. The more you have, the more annoying it is to keep up! But it’s a reasonable compromise at this price point.

            • @fault: I have it plugged in permanently. Luckily have sockets next to it

      • +2

Not too bad! Was using it with a relatively heavyish blind so it would start to struggle a bit when it got to maybe 30% power. Every 2ish months or so.

It isn't necessarily "smooth" when it comes up/down (like a bit juddery), but it has been consistent on where it stops/rolls up to to maybe half a cm.

I think I remember reading that the preferred is a motor system would be one that is actually part of the "roll" part of the blind itself, but for a cheaper makeshift system it's not too bad! Particularly for the price.

When I bought I think you needed the hub but maybe not anymore? Not sure.

  • Would this work with a string type cord drawn curtains? Could i loop the string around the ring and hope it gets traction or would i need to attach beads to the string and then run the beads through the wheel?

    • +1

It would definitely need beads on the string. Your curtains would need to be pretty light as this struggles with heavier blinds, I'd say curtains tend to need more force than blinds.

I'd say there's probably more ideal solutions.

      • Hrmmm yeah might give roll the dice give it a whirl and trust in Amazon returns. I have S fold curtains so its not even on a normal rod/track where i can buy the little roller ones!

    • +2

It works with a strings type, a nylon string if that is what you are referring to.
I have a horizontal blinds that goes left and right with a string and a bead and this works on both.

It comes with 4 circular head types that can be used with various types of strings

      • Perfect! Thank you, yeah i kind of guessed it might work but wanted to check if anyone else has tried!!

  • +3

Apparently can work with Home Assistant + Zigbee dongle. Going to risk it

    • Let me know how you go. I couldn't figure out how to get it to do that.

      • +5

Probably just like any other zigbee devices, that you just pair it with your zigbee dongle and it should apppear in HA automatically, via ZHA or Zigbee2Mqtt. I’ve checked Zigbee2Mqtt and it’s supported

      • They look exactly like the moe zigbee roller blind device on AliExpress. It works well on mqtt in home assist.

    • Works with homekit if you have aqara hub. I have a lot of aqara devices; so worth it

    • Been running my exactly that combo. Works great.

    • just a quick search, seems to work with hubitat too, so will buy this.
      Thanks OP in posting this!

      • Yes, the roller shades runs on hubitat without the aqara hub, works good so far.

    • +3

Works well for me with my HA + ConBee II Zigbee gateway (no Aqara hub required).

  • -2

    Oh… the zigbee!!!!

  • +2

Officeworks have already matched the price. JB are also selling for $79.

  • +3

Got it for $50 on ebay as well, but that ended up being a voucher error that was honoured (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/749981).

Can confirm it works with HA and Z2M and is pretty flawless. It works just like any other window cover in HA, and it reports position, speed, battery, charging status, etc

Battery lasts 3+ months operating twice a day and when it needs it I just recharge with a USB-C powerbank.

    • Dang! that was cheap! I wish it is that cheap now…

    • also works great in ZHA in Home Assistant. I have…uhh…8 of them? 10? a lot.

  • +3

There is a 3 pack that works out to $71 each (if need 3) - https://www.aqarastore.com.au/collections/bundle/products/aq…
Although Amazon return probably easier if need to return.

  • I have 2 sets of blinds on my window. First (in the window frame) lets sunlight in and the second blind (outside of the frame) keeps all sunlight out. They have their own track. Wondering if there's a way to set this up so it can open/closes both and just stop at certain positions? Or is it full open and full close?

    • providing you have enough clearance to put the motor; I think it should be working fine; as the motor will treat it as a separate entities (if you know what I mean); you just need to control it using the app/zigbee controller (like HA / Hubitat)

    • You can set percentage open/closed in your HomeKit automation

  • I have zigbee / sonoff / home assistant, do I need the hub to do an initial configuration or anything? Or just load it all in via HA and off you go?

    • Based on the information on Hubitat forum (which is similar to HA); it should work directly….

    • +1

Works fine with my Zigbee2Mqtt integration on HA. But as I said below, I really do not recommend these. Mechanically they're clunky and I've had two fail on me. I'm in the process of replacing all of them with built in blind motors.

      • +1

What blind motors do you recommend?

        • I've been buying these: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09YM7BF8V?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

I'm loathe to 'recommend' them though, I haven't had them long enough. They do work well with Zigbee2Mqtt though.

          • @bobswinkle: They look okay. Can you set the limits in HA if you don't have a remote?

            • @stuffandthat: Yep, they have an 'entity' that is a drop down box that sends commands. i.e. "set bottom limit". You click that at the bottom, it saves that as the bottom, then once calibrated you can just hide the entity.

              • @bobswinkle: Easy! I'll keep an eye on these and if they drop in price I'll grab some.

    • +4

I use these in Home Assistant. I don't have the Aqara hub, just a Zigbee dongle for ZHA. I add them like any other Zigbee device. Have been really pleased. One does a sliding door blind, so 2.1m wide or whatever. I don't reckon you'd want to go much heavier than that, but it raises it fine.

They're set to open and close according to sunset/sunrise, internal and external temperatures, when the Plex TV app starts, etc. I ordered 2 more from JB HiFi before I saw this deal!

  • Thanks OP bought two, I've got one in my lounge (controlled using the USB dongle) and programmed to open and close automatically throughout the day to different heights and has never failed or had an issue (metal ball chain for the blind). Always plugged into a USB port so it's not running off the battery, can't comment on battery life.

  • They sell some on Aliexpress for like $55 - they come with a solar panel which does a decent job of keeping it charged, but they don't respond as quickly when triggered through ZHA. pros and cons.

  • ive had nothing but issues with the arpobot ones i bought.

just confirming i need some extra hub to run these?

    • This is a zigbee-compatible device.
Yes, you would need to have zigbee controller, like Hubitat / HA….

      • I don’t suppose they would work with the Samsung smart things hub? Or the eero6+
I already have too many hubs (Samsung , Philips Hue, HA without zigbee) :(

        • +1

in theory, as long as the controller device has zigbee capability, it'll work… in theory….

  • +1

Can buy the same thing off aliexpress for around ~$50 if you dont care for aqara. Search Moes zigbee blinds motor

    • I checked just before, the AU plug Moes zigbee seems around AU$85; unless my search engine skill is not as good as yours…. would you have the direct link for them?
      thanks

      • +2

Theres a few listings but this was the cheapest. Accumulated 5 of these now. You missed the singles day cashback :( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005801861031.html

        • Wow, seems the sale is happening with the Moes zigbee (AU$29/piece)… too bad I bought the Aqara brand one already… ah well….

          • @BigLeviathan: How to get it for AUD29? I'm seeing USD34.

            • @kampret: Hm… that's weird, I saw it AU $29 last night, and this morning, it went up to AU$53.30 for the AU plug… unless they reduce the discount now… sorry not sure, bud!

              • @BigLeviathan: You were looking at welcome deal for new AliExpress customers. Disappears after logging in

  • They are rubbish, I have 5-6 of them do not know where to dispose, if anyone interested DM me, in Sydney

    • +2

Why are they rubbish? What size blinds do you have?

      • I have both 600mm and 1200mm blinds with bean chain. I used this for over two years.

First of all, this device is very particular about where it’s installed. You can’t install it directly below the roller shutter, as it can get stuck when it rises. Also, you can’t install it on the side, as that would make the curtain chain look unattractive. Over time, it may loosen the chain, making it look even worse. Additionally, the cover of this device tends to come off when the curtain is raised. Lastly, the battery life is poor.

    • Aqara doesn't sell the rotating plates as spare parts, so consider those as valuable assets

      • I throw out the parts and boxes, just have those devices as they contain lithium batteries

  • +2

I strongly recommend against these if the integrated blind motors are remotely an option for you. I have four of them. One of them works the way I wanted them to. The others are terrible and I'm in the process of replacing them. I've had multiple fail on me. They're loud and clunky.

    • warranty claim good with them?

      • It was all easy through Amazon, but the failure was a secondary annoyance to how incredibly loud and clunky they are.

    • +3

I've got somfy motors (integrated) and they're definitely much smoother and quieter than these.

Not a fair comparison though as those cost $300 and can power some huge roller blinds.

These are usually around $100 and I'm using them with some cheap blinds I bought for $30 for a smaller window.

      • Curious which Somfy motors you have & which hub/switch you’re using (if any) & whether you have it integrated with HA :)

        • +1

Not who you were replying to, but I have somfy powered external blinds (evaya) paired to a connexxon hub (https://www.somfy.com.au/products/1811591/connexoon-window-r…), it pairs to the radio signal of the remotes/motors and can control via home assistant or google assistant. The mobile app is clunky, but I've programmed sunrise/sunset timers on that, then use the app to create "scene" then have that "scene" activated by home assistant or google assistant through my nest hub. ie. "good morning children" opens all the kids bedroom blinds :)

        • +1

I have these motors on 4 sets of windows:
          https://www.somfy.com.au/products/1240512/sonesse-30-wirefre…

          The largest window is 2.55m x 2.46m.

I'm using a Bond Bridge Controller to control these which is connected to Alexa and HomeAssistant.
          https://www.smarthome.com.au/product/bond-bridge-rf-ir-contr…

          • I use Alexa only for the voice commands. E.g. I can say "Alexa, open blinds" and it opens all my living room blinds.
          • I use HomeAssistant for other automations. E.g. I get an alert when I've left the house but the blinds are not down.
      • I bought one of these they are great so much better than the crappy chain one I have.

        https://amzn.asia/d/fmPLaxM

  • +1

Is there something like this without having the need to use a separate hub?
Why would they need a hub anyway?

    • because it's zigbee… you would need zigbee compatible hub

  • +1

I have about 8 of them. For anyone curious about the product, every time when I remembered to use it, the battery is dead. So I got a bunch of power bank to recharge them for every 2 or 3 months as a regular house work. How smart I am.

    • +1

lol, cannot tell whether you are being sarcastic or nice here lol….

  • does it work directly with Alexa or do I need the hub?

  • Are you not better off buying from Temu with 40 to 45% topcashback offers?

  • It seems like everywhere online is price matching this (or getting close)

Am I correct in assuming the hub is a requirement for the Automation side? Otherwise it's just a dumb switch with up and down buttons?

    • I believe so, I have Zemismart zigbee blind motor one and without the zigbee hub (I use Hubitat), I can only control the blind physically by pressing the up/down button

  • +1

I use this with HomeAssistant connected via an Aqara hub. I have several other Aqara devices so didn't mind using the hub.

It works flawlessly. I have it set to open at sunrise and close at sunset every day.

  • +1

I have two of these at home, and they were working well with my Home Assistant (Z2M setup). The issue, however, is with the bead chain, which has snapped several times.

    • I haven’t had mine snap yet but several have become loose/floppy over the last ~2 years of use & then need “reseating” in the motor. Maybe this is a sign they’ll snap soon o_O

      • +1

If the beaded chain gets caught at the top separator of the roller, it could cause it to snap.

        • Exact thing happened to me. Bought an internal tube one so much better

  • +1

I deployed five of these in my house last week, connected them directly to my hubitat controller without the hub and works extremely well.

  • +1

    Others have discussed

    • +1

      Cool, good to know, bud!

  • How does this compare to the SOMA model that was advertised here some time ago?

  • Bought one of these a few years ago. Quality it good like most aqara products. But personally I wouldn't buy again the blind gets stuck on the bottom of it, quite noisy and bit ugly.

I ended up buy an internal tube one, 100% times better. No ugly box has not missed a beat. They are a tad more expensive~$100. Battery life is great only needs charging couple times a year versus nearly monthly.

    • +1

@trowlz would you share the link that you own please? keen to know the alternative reliable zigbee brand one…

  • @trowlz
Could you share a link for the ones you have. How often do you have to charge the battery ?
