Best Password Manager Alternative to Bitwarden

I am frustrated with autofill on Android not working well, having to log into every browser profile separately (in addition to the desktop app), and generally the app being slow.

What are your best rated alternatives to Bitwarden?

I assume 1Pass will be one of the suggestions, I will look at that.

I've been using this one for years. It is free and open source: Keepass2Android Password Safe

I'm definitely with you on this one. I've been using Keepass for ages.

I will also mention that while I absolutely recommend using a password manager for part of your security - because passwords aren't enough on their own, I have never recommended keepass to friends and family in the first instance. It's quite clunky and works best when the user has a pretty good idea of what they want and how they want to do it. If that fits you, then by all means, give this a spin. Open source, free, customizable, powerful. I think I've been using it since 2006 or 2007.

I hear about more user friendly options, both paid and unpaid, but I've gotten so used to this that I'd probably be annoyed if I had to relearn something else.

with autofill on Android not working well…

    Huh.. well for me…

    • yep, zero issues with that aspect either.

For the features, price (eg $0), audited implementation, hard to beat.

Slow performance I'd be looking at what your KDF algorithm/iterations is set at, as this can have an impact on the speed of vault initial opening.
Autofill issues, i'd likely be trying an app re-install as thats going to likely come down to possibly some android/app settings/permissions

      • I had issues on my old phone and the new phone. It doesn't pop up for all websites, or wouldn't fill in fields. I would say that some of it is due to how the websites implement fields, but Google detects these as password fields…

I'd expect that you might have the same issue with any external password manager then, for those sites, as the API prompts for password autofill are handled at the android level.

You probably have to give permissions that you haven't, or adjust settings… I have no issues using Bitwarden on Android. You might have a conflict with Google password auto fill or something like that, or your phone is a weird one. Can't see a reason why you would have problems that other Android users don't.

          • @this is us: Actually i noticed, sometimes, when using auto fill, the website will not let me to press login button. I need to remove one digit of the username and retype it. The difference is, when using autofill the field will be coloured, if i remove one digit and retype they will stay white. Kind of hard to explain

I use 1Password family plan, the vaults are great to keep work passwords, private passwords & shared passwords separate. Also has MFA built in which is great if you're sharing accounts, e.g. Amazon, I don't need chase my wife for the OTP as it has built in authenticator. Not sure if it's the best but I am too integrated after they ran 1-year free promo, and I have no complaints on PC, Mac, iPhone (you can't add new passwords if the app isn't automatically picked up) and previously android so will renew for the second time in Jan-25.

    • 1Password on Safari on Mac is dreadful. Switched to Bitwarden because of it lol.

      • I don't use Safari… I use Edge (as Chrome repeatedly crashed on me during important applications and stuff costing me my progress) where it works fine, and it generally works fine in Safari on iPhone. I have also assigned it to the action button to make life a bit easier.

  • I am frustrated with autofill on Android not working well, having to log into every browser profile separately (in addition to the desktop app), and generally the app being slow.

Most of these issues sound like the app isn't configured correctly, and set to log you out all the time.

Maybe spend some time to allow Bitwarden the correct access on Android, and change your vault timeout to never (if the profile is secured correctly).

  • change your vault timeout to never

I'll do on app restart for starters, but I'll give it a try!

Lastpass is what i have used for yrs

    • Oof, I don't know. LastPass has been hacked several times and afaik being considered with caution in the cybersecurity community

      • true, but the entire principal behind a password vault is that the vault file itself is worthless due to the encryption applied.
The advantage ones like Bitwarden have is that this encryption is open source and therefore well audited, so can be proven that your password blob is about as good as a random blob of data in terms of being able to decrypt it without your master password.

    • Sorry to hear it!
