DIY Trap/Mixture That Actually Works on House Flies?

Hi,

It's getting to be that time of year again. House flies, we can make all those diy fly traps, but what actually works? Sure, they come for the dog poop in the sand, but when i clean that up, they don't - so far - seem to be diverting to whatever mixture i put in the fly trap? (old milk bottle).

I've even wondered if it's due to me placing it in a corner hanging from the gutter, and would it be better half buried in the sand? Except they dog would likely dig it up first thing so that's a yeah nah mate….

Any ideas? Something that'll work in the house would be good to.

  • I wanted to try the ones sold by Bunnings but got put off by the negative reviews. My neighbours don't read product reviews so they hung one in their back yard. The odour was worse that what I can only image death smells like. They soon realised it wasn't possible to hang the trap far away enough to not be overwhelmed by the odor. So back to square one, prompt dog waste removal.

  • RUOK?

  • Have you tried beer?

A spoonful of Vegemite mixed in warm water does the trick for me.

Cut the neck off a plastic drink bottle near the wide point. Put in Vegemite and warm water mix. Invert the lid and jamb it in place. Leave it outside. Once it starts fermenting, dead flies contribute to the stink!

But OP wants to catch flies, not a RogerLoger…

      • 🙂 Just as well, because I don't fit through the neck of a bottle.

  • The hanging lantern like fly trap is what you need. Works for me. If you run out of the original trap you can do a mix of shrimp paste with water.

  • Put dog poop in the fly trap?

  • Could buy a bunch lizards, or spiders.
