OzBargain Website Has Been Freezing My Chrome for The Last Few Weeks

Started a few weeks ago. Stalls my browser and sends google into very high memory usage. Is for a few brief seconds and eventually I can browse, but multi tab browsing on this website has become a nightmare. Also, whenever I click on a deal link - get brief freezes and can't use other tabs. Cleared cache/images etc and it actually made the stalling worse.

Could it be an adblocker issue?

Could it be an adblocker issue?

I'm really thinking outside the square here but try this wacky idea.

Turn off ad blocker. See if ozbargain freezes chrome.

Report your findings in a new thread.

    • You got me there! Yeah it fixes the few second freezing, but website still feels stallish and multi tab browsing isn't the quickest. Just don't remember ozb website being this intensive on mem is all. There is a brief 1 second stall whenever I switch between tabs.

Is the issue only with ozb? Not for any other sites?

        • Just played around a lil. Could open up multiple youtube pages (profile load page with video previews) okay, but something like smh.com.au was doing same sort of mini freezes while trying to open up multiple tabs.

Some 3rd party extensions can cause major performance issues. I have had problems with extensions that modify webpages and one that had AI features (it was a simple text expander addon that the developer updated to include some unnecessary features that caused major memory leaks.

Try removing the addons one-by-one until you find the culprit. You can also create a new Chrome Profile, start off with a blank slate with no addons and see if that fixes anything. You can always switch back to the original profile with your preferred addon at any time.

    • Thanks - It was adblocker (pausing wasn't enough, needed completely removal)

  • Tried a incognito tab?

    • Thanks. This fixed everything - could swiftly browse all websites and multi tab. So I went back and deleted the only extension I had left installed which was adblocker.

I have now removed adblocker and we are back to normal. Even though i had it paused on this page - it was still causing major issues.

I utilise a adblocker a lot so I didn't want to remove but ah well. Will look into alternatives
