Normally on sale around the $450 mark, haven't personally seen it this low before. I've got one in my car and it's great for the price, I only got it because I hate phone cradles and needed something with Carplay for maps.

I will somewhat agree with you, mine constantly disconnected on carplay but it turns out that was due to lint in my phone plug, once I cleaned it out it was fine. My phone was also struggling to connect to my charger at home. The glare is also a bit of an issue at times and I'm not sure if the updated model (55/6500 or something?) has a better screen, but for the $300 saving I'm happy to put up with it. I use it for maps once a month when I'm going somewhere random which is when the glare can be annoying, otherwise I'm only using it to change songs when driving when all I'm doing is hitting the next song button and the glare is a non issue.
+1 to checking the charge port for lint. The cable kept falling out of my phone in the vent holder thing and I was really annoyed because I thought the port was failing even though I only use it in the car and charge wirelessly everywhere else. Spent 20 minutes cleaning it out with a toothpick on Saturday and it works perfectly now. Couldn't believe how much had gotten jammed in there over the last couple of years.
I would probably avoid a Sony unit.
I have a AX6000 which works completely fine with Android 13. Android 14 on my phone has introduced stutter and bad performance. A cheaper $150 unit is still working completely fine.
It's hard to tell exactly where the blame lies - Sony or Google.
(mine is in a Navara)
To be fair the head unit is the least of your issues.
I have the AX3000 model in my wife's 2010 Subaru Forester for the past 4-5 years.
Personally, it's been very reliable with Andriod Auto.
We did experience disconnection with the headunit when the cable was bump/moved. Since switching to a newer, sturdier cable which connects more securely to the phone, there is no issue with connectivity and responsiveness.
IMO, money well spent to keep a 14 y.o. old car relatively modern (from a media screen perspective).
If you even touch the USB cable in the slightest Android Auto disconnects
As has been pointed out, this means either your cable is stuffed or the USB C port on your phone is stuffed.
Replace the cable and clean out your USB C port - these issues have nothing to do with the Sony unit.
Can highly recommend this for Carplay.
This head unit is ok but also have experienced issues on Android. Music will sometimes freeze and Android Auto will crash.
It is also impossible to see the screen when there is sun on it. I wish I had bought another branded unit.
What would be a good headunit for around this price (android auto)?
Giving my two cents I would put aside more for a Pioneer wireless AA head unit. They’re not that much more these days.
Which one would you recommend?
DMH-Z6350BT is a popular unit. There is a lot of wireless units on sale atm, but definitely do your own research. Capacitive touch is a must.
how does this compare to the AX1000??? i much prefer volume knobs to buttons and I only use apple

it would be better if that knob was on the right hand side of the screen. It's still better than the other one.
the folks have this in their car and it works the same as my AX3000
Seriously, avoid this headunit if you are an Android Auto user. I've had it installed for around 2 years and it used to constantly freeze (which has been fixed with firmware updates) however the biggest problem is what I believe to be a USB power issue. If you even touch the USB cable in the slightest Android Auto disconnects. Not sure if it's the same for Carplay (@OP has it been ok for you?).
Also if your head unit sits high in the dash (mine is in a Navara) in summer you will hardly be able to read the screen due to the glare.
