AMD B650 or Wait for B850 in ITX?

I'm debating whether to buy the ASRock B650E Phantom Gaming WIFI, mini-ITX or wait for the upcoming B850. Since I’m specifically looking at the ITX form factor, I’m unsure if B850 will offer any real advantages over B650. Plus, the B850 could be pricier, so I’m leaning towards the ASRock B650E Phantom Gaming WIFI.

The ASRock B650E Phantom Gaming WIFI has some appealing features for me: it doesn’t include a VRM fan, which I think might increase longevity. And for the NVMe fan that comes with the motherboard, I can avoid overheating by simply choosing an NVMe with a heatsink.

I’m planning to pair it with the Ryzen 7900 (non-X) for its low heat output, which hopefully suits the Dan A4-SFX case.

I am aware B850 is not yet out but I am simply planning ahead.

What do you all think?

  • The new 800 series mobos aren't adding much at all, don't wait.
Is there are reason you're choosing 7900 over 7800X3D, the x3d is (now) the second best gaming processor there is and is very low power ~60w.

    • Thanks, I will see whether I can get it cheaper on black friday.

The 7800X3D is 120W TDP. Where else the 7900 is only 60W. The case is Dan A4-SFX so the latter CPU is preferred.

This computer will just be office and entertainment use so I don't need X3D CPU. One may argue I should get a cheaper CPU if it is just office use, but I keep my computer for 10 years so I want something with a bit of power for longevity.

I am buying now to replace my 10 years old PC that will stop running Windows 11 23H2 when EOL next year.

      • Unfortunately TDP is a pretty meaningless number these days, see here. 7800X3D has the same power usage but much better gaming performance so rates higher on the overall efficiency.
