When Will The Ad Invasion Stop, CBA to Introduce Ads to ATMs

Commonwealth Bank introduces ads on ATMs: ‘Australian banking first’

Am I the only one that is disgusted with every single company pushing more and more ads into everything we do in life? CBA are set to introduce their own "media network", which will run on ATMs. Reading further it just seems like a way for them to introduce ads while you use the ATM.

A couple of quotes from the article:

CBA chief marketing officer Jo Boundy said the launch was a “significant step” for the bank and would improve customer experience and “deepen the connection between content and commerce”.

Improve my customer experience by showing me ads you make money from?

A CBA spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo Finance the ad may appear before or after ATM transactions, or while it's processing. There will be no disruption to ATM transactions.

No disruption to us while preventing us from using the ATM while you show an ad?

It feels like when Apple started to remove wall chargers and put it down to e-waste rather than them making/saving more money. Now CBA with ads that will "improve" my ATM use.

  • When Will The Ad Invasion Stop

Stop? It hasn't started yet. You'll be seeing ads in your dreams in no time.

      We're getting there soon

Everything is a battle for the mind (and heart)

  • I doubt they are really interested in showing people ads while they make a withdrawl.

This will be more about changing the ATM to a big touchscreen, which shows everyone walking by an add while not in use.
Similar to what Telstra did with the payphone obsolescence. They have all these machines in high traffic locations gathering cobwebs, so convert them into digital billboards.

    • And you’re OK with every inch of space being a billboard to shove products down your throat 24/7?

      • They are almost exclusively in shopping mall/streets which cover every surface with advertising and logos already.
        Just a non issue.

  • Just do what I do when I see an ad. Ignore it.

I record almost all TV and fast forward through the ads. Saves about 15 minutes per hour, and sometimes more for really popular shows. I of course carefully study the ads and base my purchasing decisions solely based on them, as far as the advertisers and TV stations are concerned.

  • Don’t really care about the atm but their app is getting super annoying with ads built it and always trying to push new products. Great app but not anymore with the in app spam.

This has been the path we've been heading down for several years now but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't see this as a problem or are happy to just accept it. We're moving toward a society where buying something doesn't always mean you will "own" that thing, where trust is becoming eroded and where companies are going ham on trying to figure out ways to milk more and more money out of everyone. Look at how subscriptions have exploded in the past decade and how even now, services like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video show freakin ads on paid plans. I mean, really? Billionaires need their 304th investment property eh?

We are heading towards a dystopian future. Sad thing is most people don't actually care. They just go about their daily lives, buying that shiny new phone every year, upgrading to the new car because they have a baby coming along, happily eating red meat and chicken 4-5 times a week without realising the suffering it causes to animals and the environment. All the while lining the pockets of billionaires who command the rules in society, because they donate to political campaigns and get their puppets into office who then pass policies that enrich them further whilst everyone else suffers.

No doubt people will say what I'm saying is crazy/insane/conspiracy theory stuff but if people actually sat down and actually thought about it they would see that it's the reality we live in.

It feels like when Apple started to remove wall chargers and put it down to e-waste rather than them making/saving more money.

I personally do think that e-waste is a massive problem and humans can be extremely careless and wasteful when it comes to buying electronics, but Apple should've allowed people to opt-in for the charger at no extra cost or at a discounted cost or something instead of straight out excluding it and forcing people to buy one at full price if they needed one (at least I'm guessing that's what they did).

It's been very clear to me in recent years that we are getting deeper and deeper into the late stage capitalism phase. Maybe I'm using that incorrectly, basically it's the phase where companies really ramp up how to squeeze every extra cent or datapoint out of you, and yes, it sucks. Although there are some good things, I think for instance Apple is starting to allow people to repair their own devices? Valve has the Steam Deck which is very repairable. But most companies suck arse.

Google's AI definition of late stage capitalism basically says it all.

Thanks to the NPC who downvoted me, it's much easier to downvote instead of rubbing two braincells together.
