Is This Laptop a Good Deal?

I'm looking at laptops as my oldest is starting secondary next year and needs a byod.

For those that don't want to click through, it's a R5 5500u, 16b ram, 512ssd 14inch laptop for $499 with a code, $549 without. I'm not sure if the code is eBay plus only, but I am a eBay plus haver.

Thoughts on this;

    It should be fine for most, but keep in mind the build quality of an Ideapad 1 isn't going to be great (plastic build based on what I've seen). R5 5500U is also an almost 4-year-old CPU and we have made a lot of efficiency gains since then so battery life may be bad. I have seen some better deals around but not too many at this price.

    Perhaps might be worth checking it out at OW if your local has display stock.

    Also worth mentioning that integrated graphics have made big leaps since then so gaming will be poor if your child is into that.

  • Thanks for the input. There won't be any gaming, so this seems like it should be sufficient. I hadn't thought of the Officeworks price beat. Looks like my local has stock, I'll just have to make sure they're actually the same model code.

  • Just bought a refurbished Dell i5 3535 from their factory outlet for $319
    Good basic laptop with 8GB Ram and 256SSD
    Unmarked with 12 mths warranty

  • I did consider refurbs, but I thought it might be better to go new for piece of mind. I'm not sure if a 5+ year old battery will cut it too, for a full day at school.
