R1700BT link - https://www.centrecom.com.au/edifier-r1700bt-studio-20-bluet…

Based on my research, R1280DBs seems like the one to go for, for the updated remote and subwoofer output and various inputs like bluetooth, optical/coax.

R1700BT has better bass and highs vs the R1280DBs with the better mids.

Online forums have also suggested the R1700BT sounds better than the R1700BTs

Compared to other deal with the MR4s, these R1280DBs have similar sound with more inputs at $15 more.

I have the 1280s and am seriously impressed for the price point. Im not an audiophile but they sound amazing to my ears

  • i have the R1280DB as well. great set of speakers for my PC. They punch about their weight with great sound through the range and do not distort too much when the volume gets high.

  • Would these be good for living room TV speakers? Currently using no soundbar or any external speakers

    • No, Probably better off with something with HDMI input controllable by the TV

      • To go down that route, you'll usually need an AV receiver of some sort with passive speakers. That could easily balloon out the cost to ten times over these cheap Edifier speakers.

Cheap soundbar with HDMI input is better option

          • @icecold27: You will not get a soundbar that sounds as good and full as proper speakers anywhere near this price.

Yeah, we used an Edifier active speaker for our TV for years before upgrading.

I recommend getting the Edifier R1280DBs as it has an optical toslink input. Most TVs have an optical output for audio so it will be an easy connection with no loss in quality. Also, this Edifier model has a subwoofer output so you can add any active subwoofer later to get an upgrade in bass.

    • Yes, I bought this 3 years ago and only used it as a soundbar for my TV. Only downside I guess you have to control it manually, doesn't turn on/off with the TV.

I have a set of the 1280 hooked up to the TV and from my experience with them, they were a better/richer sound than the similarly priced soundbar I was comparing them to (a JBL SB120) but that can come at the cost of simplicity depending on your TV outputs. Adding extra remotes to the equation and all that. The soundbar had a slight edge for talk heavy things like 1-on-1 interviews, voices were in general a little crisper.
The speakers were the winning choice for me in the end but the margin wasn't huge.

FWIW it depends on your situation.

Personally I have a dumb TV with Apple TV connected, and R1280 as main speakers.

We control everything with the Apple TV remote.

Very happy with this setup. Considering you're coming from built-in TV speakers, you'll be more than happy IMHO

  • I think I have the one pictured. The weight of the speakers is impressive. Glad they've updated the remote control as it was a cheap afterthought.

  • I used the earlier model R1280db for few years connected to my tv (with weak buil in speakers), I'm impressed with it's quality and sound (I'm not an audiophile). I sold it because I don't have enough space to put them in new place. I would recommend this

As usual, the extra gold is in the comments.

    • Great find! Pity it doesn't have enough qty for posting as a deal though

    • What is the $10 code

Dunno if it's still active for the black version.

  • How do these compare to Pioneer DM40s?

I listen to music whilst I work, and might get back to some bedroom DJing eventually, but always found the DM40s a bit of a dull listen (I know, they’re monitors, and maybe that’s why)

  • Does anyone know if this can be used in place of Soundbar for my Sony android TV ? How would this compared to a good Sound bar ? Thank you

    • Probably not. No HDMI so would need to use a separate remote to control the volume.

      • Depends on the TV, mine I can plug into either optical/toslink or 3.5mm and just tell the TV to use external speakers so no need for additional remote for volume control, other than real fringe cases. I suspect that is quite common but not a guarantee.
You will still have to power the speakers on/off seperately though if you don't want to leave them running.

  • I have the R1700 and it's simply amazing for the money - the sound is genuinely great.

Although, not many features / connection options.

But they'd be great as TV speakers via RCA - just gotta turn em on and off manually.

We use them as PC speakers - a bit bulky but brilliant.

  • We have a pair of 1280DB and 1580MB. Both have amazing clarity. Really great if you care about quality.

  • Really recommend the 1280DB at this price point

  • Do i really need it? no. Do i really want it? Yes.

  • Hodl. Got the R1380Ts on Amazon last BFS for $24 Deal of the Day

    Amazing sound

  • I've had a pair of the R1280DBs, absolutely nothing special at all. Sound is pretty tinny, frankly unimpressive even at that price. I ended up getting a secondhand pair of Fostex PM0.5s. Orders of magnitude better. They where more expensive, but seriously, spend the money. Buy something decent (doesn't have to be Fostex) you'll have it and enjoy for years.

Did you give the speakers time to settle in? From what I understand, brand new speakers need run in time to reach their optimal performance level.

      • 100%. I was also not impressed initially. But after a week I remember thinking wow what happened. Then I connected a sub to the sub out and was blown away even more.

Made up audiophile placebo rubbish, break in isn't a measurable thing for audio.

        • So what informs your opinion?

      • I had them for a while, I just never liked the sound. You get what you pay for I suppose, I didn't pay much so I didn't get much, so I ended up selling them on.

  • Is there a partially decent set of passives in this price range? My old Accusounds from 20 years ago finally carked it.

If you are looking to spend 150-250 try second hand, you can find some good stuff if you are patient and do a bit of research.

  • Online forums have also suggested the R1700BT sounds better than the R1700BTs

So which one is better?? Genuine question

  • I love my R1700BT speakers. They are our family sound system, a phone in the family room that runs spotify, and bluetooth to these. They are too loud at full volume for us (i.e. tey do more than you need). Great for the price.
