That's double the price of a 2TB NVMe drive.. Baffling they decided to go the proprietary route when it doesn't even have a speed advantage.

    • +3

Yeah, it sucks balls, but it's close to the cheapest it's been.

I was contemplating spending an extra 300ish and get another XBOX as it feels wrong to buy 2TB for 300+ but I finally bit the bullet at this price point :(.

MS forgot they are in last place.

        Grow up.

      • +3

dont be like that, i love my Zune

The interface is CFastExpress, but the main issue is Microsoft put in a very small list of allowed SSDs. If Microsoft is willing to stop that annoying restriction, then a CFastExpress to NVMe adapter would work.

    That's craaazy money. I paid $145 for a 2TB SSD for my PS5 about a year ago.

Microsoft really screwed the pooch with this one.

      Hi Mate,
Can you tell me which one did you buy? Did you replace the existing PS5 drive or it was an external SSD that you bought? I am also looking for buy one, but reading a lot of comments about speed etc, which made me confuse which one to buy. Appreciate your help. Thanks

You cannot replace the existing PS5 SSD, it is soldered onto the motherboard.

You can add an M.2 NVMe storage drive, provided it is Gen 4 and meets the minimum 5,500 MB/s speed. You will also need a heatsink to dissipate heat.

The benchmark deal from last year:

        Lexar NM790 SSD: 2TB $129, 4TB $255, 1TB $65 Delivered @ BPC Tech

That wasn't the cheapest, but many people managed to get the SSDs. While Sony recommends 5500MB/s minimum read speed, Sony does allow any PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs. The one I've been using was initially above 5500MB/s, but Sony changed the test app to stop using zero fill test (which plenty of SSDs cheat in that type of test) so it is technically below that. Digital Foundry tested the slowest PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD and that works fine as well (that one only does 3500MB/s).

        get the lexar 790,
but will need a heat sink,
works great and price is great

I got a 2TB Samsung 980 with heatsink. US import from Amazon, like this one.
In addition to the 825GB onboard storage PS5's have an internal M.2 slot which is unpopulated. You just gotta add a compatible M.2 SSD and bam, you're on your way!

Everything proprietary on that console. It's infuriating. No third party wireless controllers without licensing of their shitty connection feature. Which also has made headphones that work on all other devices not work on theirs either. Console in 3rd place and making it harder and more expensive for their base. It's like someone is intentionally sabotaging them from the inside.

    • For me i quite like it easily removable as i have a x and a s for travel. So when i travel i simply pull it out and plug it in.

Agree, much better option on the PS5.

Keep in mind it's never RRP - this is maybe ~$10-30 below normal price via Amazon overseas.

My Xbox turns on then suddenly turns off, but my PS3 is still going strong

My PS1 sound is crackling but my Sega Master System still works great

I rather save that money and put it towards a switch 2.

    • How many XBOX games can you install on that?

  • -3

You don't really need this storage.
Even tho we are restricted by the slow speed USB A port, as long as you have a fast storage, you can play games without issue from it.
I have a bunch of NVMe around so I was using it to play with Quick Resume included without issues.

I only got this storage from Amazon Germany to reduce the writing cycle on the internal storage.
Ironically, since buying the storage, I have barely touched my XSX, the games have been pure garbage and this gen consoles have been the most scam sh1t ever, Sony included.

In case you don't know, at this very moment you can replace the internal storage of a XSX/XSS but there is no way to reinstall the OS like One S/One .
PS5 folks are even more fkd lmao, its internal storage is soldered haha

  • I paid $700+ for one of these 3 years ago.

Had purchased a Series S (started with the S due to the Series X shortage). Initially I was fine with rotating games on/off the 500gb hard drive and my external hdd. But as I started installing and playing more "Series" titles as opposed to just Xbox One games…. the process became more tedious. Thus I researched and purchased. I did save a bit of money by buying JB Hifi giftcards at a discount and purchased the device with those gift cards.

A more money than brains decision but one that I was comfortable with as I was able to keep more games installed and wasn't wasting time copying game installs from one device to another to another just to be able to play something else. Been an absolute beast using the same card with the new Series X Galaxy (2tb) console, shouldn't run out of space for a few weeks! :P

  • Bought one for my granddaughter’s play station.
