Ducted Aircon Deals for Nov 2024

Hi all, I need help replacing my 20 year old ducted aircon.

We moved to this house about a year ago and got ourselves a split inverter only for our master bedroom as the ducted aircon was a beast in terms of consuming power but did not supply much cold air even on the lowest temperature.

  1. Can someone please look into this service tag and tell me what’s the kW size of this aircon?

  2. Our internal space is around 150sq, single brick walled and 4 bedrooms. There are internal ducts already there.

  3. We need 4 zones, 3 for the bedrooms and one for the open kitchen, lounge area. The unit needs to be power efficient with cold and heating options.

  4. I called few nearby places in Sydney Liverpool area they are really bad. They want to come inspect and will charge me $250 for their time. One tradesman wanted to design the entire ducts. I’m not looking for a fancy installation as we will only turn on aircon occasionally when we have guests or when we need to.

  5. Where can I get a good deal or should I wait for black Friday deal? I need a rough pricing guide. It’s best we get something from a dealer who would sell and install with good warranties.

  • Cooling: 15.7kW
    Heating: 18.5kW

I didnt get that from the picture, but from the brochure of the model number on the outdoor unit (puh-6yksa)

  • The specs you have are for a Mr Slim that is about 15 years old.

For Ducted, I went with Fujitsu but at present there are no Cashback deals at the moment.

    • I thought R22 got phased out years before.

There are internal ducts already there.

If they are 20 years old then replace them. Most quotes will include replacing them so the installer can warranty their work.

  • How much am I looking at? Any recommendations around Sydney area or South West Sydney.

Forgot to mention I have 3 phase power board with the current setup.

Somewhere between $10-$15k is my guess

      • Expect will be right in this range if including like a airtouch etc.

  • Choose a reputable brand with a good reputation.
Your problem is not finding the A/C system, it's finding a reputable installer (some don't follow installation guides to the letter).
There are no other problems if you choose your brand and accept the installer's advice. Unfortunately for you, my installer lives near Gosford and probably would not take on new customers ATM.

MHIAA FDUA works incredibly well for us. Using 3 zones. The 4th 'spills' to the downstairs area (too much power to do bedrooms alone - surplus air needs to go somewhere).

We have a wall control panel, but had the accessory board installed so we can control it via phone. If we go out, we switch it on about 1/2hr away from home and find the house comfortable on arrival.

Incredibly quiet, both indoors and out.

    • Spot on. I have never got a ducted aircon and the guys I searched around my area seems like scum bags.
If someone can refer me to a good installer that would be great.

  • How come these are so cheap compared to the $10-15k estimations as above?

    • Because it doesn't include ducting, zoning, outlets delivery or installation and installers warranty.

    • Installation is a major task. One day to get rid of the old POC, haul the heavy new units into place and mount them. Another day to do ducting, wiring and drain from the inside unit. There are also things to get rid of, including extraction of old-style gases from an existing system. Site clean. In my case, the 'inside' unit could be hung below the house. Otherwise, they need to find a way to get it into ceiling void, mount it in a garage or find another option. After the installation, they have a stack of paperwork to do.

Installers may want you to buy a unit from them. The difference between wholesale and retail will form part of their costing calculations. Like most tradies, it's not just their time. They need to run a vehicle, have suitable tools, have a computer, including billing software, labourer/apprentice/partner, delivery, tipping fees, nuts, bolts, drill bits etc. They have to pass the costs of running a business on (or go broke). Hence, about $85 per hour for the qualified person and a lower rate for labourer/apprentice who does the gopher work and heavy lifting.

    • Ummm..
I mean…you understand that is just the unit right ?

  • Great thanks a lot.

Is there any deals at the moment or some websites I can look into for bargain during Black Friday?

I found few traders around my area 5 star Google reviews by few thousand people. Upon looking at the reviews I think they paid people to write reviews.

Scum bags were so rude with me. One guy said why did I even bother purchasing a house with such an old aircon.

    • Tradies don't do black Friday deals. Just get multiple quotes with similar spec systems so you can compare apples with apples (or as close as possible).

You have to do the leg work. There is no click/pay/sit back and relax for ducted reverse cycle systems installations.

If you feel like you need a bargain then you'll just have to negotiate with the tradies. Prepare to be rejected. It's approaching summer. They have plenty of work and don't need your money.

      • I’ll ask a silly question. What’s a gas duct system as my aircon is run through electricity and don’t see a gas line?

When I talk to the tradies what sort of system do I want to have which is energy efficient?
My ideal scenario would be if one bedroom aircon is on the power consumption shouldn’t be like running the entire compressor.

Sorry. I don't want to can't help any further.

        • Your existing system utilises gas for heat transfer, but the gas is transported in pipes/lines not ducts. Hope this helps to clear things up.

How come - everywhere where you interact with a business you find them rude ?
I think you are missing the common denominator…

  • Does those can replace a heater duct heating?

    • If you have gas ducted system and live in Victoria you can get state government subsidised reverse cycle systems. Google is your friend.

      • Thanks friend.

  • "Im not looking for a fancy installation as we will only turn on aircon occasionally when we have guests or when we need to"

When was it last serviced? Maybe it should be putting out more cold than it currently is? Maybe you need someone to have a look at it.

If you dont use it much maybe it works out cheaper than a new unit?

I've got a feeling a new system is going to cost a lot more than you want to pay.

  • i went through a similar experience recently, needed to replace a ~18yr old ducted aircon for a house with 4br, 5 existing zones and 9 existing vents.
Our original was 18kw cooling power.
In the end we ended up going with a Daikin 20kw.

I went through HiPages to get quotes. Got 5 quotes all up, ppl came round to my place. No-one charged for quotes. We're in Syd.
Quotes ranged from $13,500 (this is the one i chose) to $19,000 for the same work. Most quotes had leaving the old ducting in (as it was still in good shape, and i was ok with that), but the quote i went for threw in replacing the ducts in for free.
I also got the AdvantageAir MyAir controller (this is a 3rd party tablet that gets mounted on the wall that's nicer than Daikin's native controller) as part of that deal.

All in all im happy with how that all panned out EXCEPT what i didnt realise is that the high-kw models are actually very noisy (the external unit). Its not the decibels of noise actually which are relatively low, but the type of noise - an annoying high pitched whine. I'm considering how to deal with this presently. In retrospect, going for a lower-KW model may've been a better option, as that would've been quiter. The cooling/heating/wifi-app aspect of it all though is all very good, no complaints.

    • Thanks a lot mate. I left you a message.

  • I’m getting few guys coming in this week hopefully I’ll get more education and quotes.

Another newbie question. With ducted system let’s say bedroom 1 zone is on - does the fan speed go crazy speed as other zones are off and it’s a 16kW inverter?

Energy efficiency wise what sort of kW can I expect per hour of use? My current one consumes 26kW/ hour of use.

Lastly, how would the bedroom 1 manage temperature control? I was told there’s one thermostat and usually at the controller side.

  • Hey Nick,
not sure this what you're looking for but i found this cost calculator for a ducted air conditioning installation. I know that when they factor in the cost it's just based on sqm not number of zones etc.

    https://www.thomair.com.au/cooling/reverse-cycle-ducted-air-…

    Goodluck :)

    • Thanks a lot mate. I’m getting few quotes now and learning a lot by the end of this week I’ll post some comparison to choose from.

Btw, between Samsung and Daikin which one is better? 16kW.

    Hello,

No worries, Daikin is better in my opinion. Mitsubishi Electric is even better!

    Cheers
