Cashrewards are offering 5% cashback on catch gift cards aswell if you really want to get the savings pumping

  • My young one wanted to start collecting Pokémon cards anyone know where to start d I just buy boosters or go the big boxes ?

    • +5

It depends on how old they are and your financial situation honestly.

If they're young and are going to rough the cards around and may lose interest within a few months, you may want to start off cheap. Potentially look at getting bulk from a card store for cheap and maybe to find them a cheap "best card" for them. You can get shiny, cool looking cards for a couple dollars.

Thanks much appreciated ill head down to our local store this weekend!

Buy them bulk… lol man you are mean. They wanna open packs!!!

        • +4

If they're young, they really won't care about it being bulk or packs.
They just want to see a lot of pokemon cards.

My nephew was the happiest when I gave him all my pokemon card bulk.
Dude sits there for an hour at a time, just looking at the cards.

If he is still into pokemon next year, I'll get him some booster packs.

Sorry but what? Maybe your nephew wanted a heap of bulk, but every kid wants to open packs.

I still remember all the packs I opened as a kid - I don't however remember the worthless bulk that came with it.

@pharcyde: Okay mate, feel free to offer your suggestions to the person asking the question.
I didn't ask for your suggestions, so you're yelling into the void.

It also depends on if they're ever going to play the Pokemon TCG or just collect them.

I think 9 out of 10 kids these days won't even realise there's an entire fairly complicated strategy game that can be played with the cards but it does require having a complete deck of 60 cards per player with sufficient Pokemon, energy cards, trainers, etc as well as understanding the rulebook fairly well and the concept of deck-building to suit a particular style of play.

The boxed deck packs are specifically designed for play and don't really make much sense to buy from a collector standpoint unless you want the guarantee of a getting certain promo/holo card (which because of their ubiquity in the boxed decks will never be worth that much to collectors anyway).

Just anything with packs usually. Try to avoid buying stuff that says deck on the packaging, that's not usually what they're after.

I was given a fake Pokemon set (one of the tin boxes) when I was younger. Ended up using it for a few months before I lost interest. I had my fun and my parents saved money. It might be a starting option for younger children. If they end up getting serious, you can buy them the legitimate sets.

It's not recommended but it's certainly an option. If you have the money, it's probably better to buy the real stuff!

  • Any methods/sites for watching for 151? Or just refreshing?

    • +1

Scalpers already bought it all up

      • Of course they did

        • Yeah I saw them on bigw this morning at 8am and they were gone by the time I got to work at 9am! Managed to buy 5 booster bundles before that, although will probably be cancelled I'm guessing.

      • Yeah roger that, thought it'd be a decent reprint but same old same old.

      • +3

Good luck to them with the reprints coming in Feb 2025.

    • Saw on ebgames, blinked, then it was gone :(

      F5 spam is the way.
I got 2 packs of 151 this morning… Charizard here we come!

I went in a EB Games near me, saw 151 poster set in the cabinet.
Asked if they had anymore 151 and they did, lots of 151 Booster bundles in the back hidden.
They were selling 1 per customer, and you had to specifically ask for it.

Worth noting that this is just a made up rule this store implemented, I've been to other stores and they said they cannot stop a customer buying the whole stock since no limits are technically in place.

      • 151 has been removed from their website, so its probably all gone by now.

  • Thanks, got some

  • What price is good for Pokémon 151 booster bundles?

    • +1

Any RRP price is a good price, the only win is even having the option of buying them.

      • Is $40 a good price?

  • Where does Target keep their cards in store?

    • +1

      Depends on the store.
The nearest kmart (khub) to me keeps them all displayed in the checkout.

    • +3

Dodgy suburb: At the back of the store near the customer service counter, probably in a locked cabinet.
In a not dodgy suburb: At the front of the store behind a counter at the checkouts.

  • +1

    Also $5 at Target

    https://www.target.com.au/c/toys/board-games-puzzles/trading…

Cards are usually kept at or nearby to Layby counter in most stores to stop people going for five finger discount.

    • and yes as with other comments - Subiaco has them in the checkout area, plus in a locked cabinet at Layby / Change rooms.

  • Been wanting to start collecting pokemon cards lately but after seeing what the scalpers are doing with 151 sets has prevented me from starting.
saving me $$$ in the long run i think!

    • +3

Yeah, I wanted to start my 151 collects a few months back with my daughter, but no stock anywhere. EB randomly started having stock this week but sold out everywhere within minutes. Got lucky this morning with 2 boxes, had to line up before opening to get the last 2, 4 people in front also bought the same. You will never get a master set with the supply we get in Aus.

  • Anyone playing the TCG Pocket? PM me lets be friends :)

  • Twilight Masquerade OOS

  • my ordered was cancelled, listing has been removed.

  • What is the deal with 151? how come they don't print more!? So stupid I can't even buy booster packs.
It was my first set getting back in TCG and it is leaving a bad taste in mouth as can't even try to collect a full set.

    • It has been reprinted multiple times. Popular sets sell out. Welcome to Pokemon; the money printing machine.
