Recommendations for Japan eSIM? Sim? Please

Any recommendations for a Japan eSim or Sim please? Hoping to buy in Oz to be ready when we land in Japan. Or is there a better way?
Will need to buy 7. Thanks.

  • How you gonna get 7 people in your hire car?
If you’re all traveling together you can share data so might only need a couple of SIMs

    • We'll need to separate and stay in contact as not everyone wants to do the same thing together everyday.

    • Clown car :)

I tried Saily - it was terrible, didn't get connectivity until two hours after I arrived. Then two days of extremely slow service. What's worse, they refused to provide any refund, but finally gave me some credit. Hopefully it'll work better in another country.

I switched to Ubigi and that worked pretty well for me.

    • Ahh thanks for that. Will avoid Saily.

You bought Ubigi in Japan though? Will check out Ubigi and see if we can get it in AU before flying out.

Check klook, traveloka erc just search esim in this ozb top right corner.

Ubigi eSIM has ways worked great for me. Use somebodies referral code on ozbargain for a discount.

    • Agree with this. Ubigi was both reliable and reasonably priced

TravelKon eSims work a treat for me.

Ditto. Piece of cake, and we're probably due for a discount sale sometime soon

Currently in Japan using one of their esims! Apart from their data speed can get a bit slow sometimes, no issues

I can vouch for klook esim. Used them in Japan back in September and they worked instantly after I scan the QR code with my Android Phone. Bought another one last week for Indonesia and also worked straight after the scan.

I used TravelKon for my last 3 week trip and worked great. No drop-outs anywhere from Fukuoka to Kyoto to Kanazawa through to Tokyo. Always good speeds and decent price as well.

I'd recommend eSim personally - less fiddly than the physical ones.

Same experience for me with TravelKon - worked straight away from landing, really simple setup. Good speeds, plenty of 5G coverage.

      +1 for TravelKon

+1 for travelkon as well, used them last time we went to Japan and it worked great. Esim was a lot easier than a wifi device which we used prior to that trip.

      • Those who used Travelkon, did you just choose the Japan plan or a Asia plan.
We are heading to Sth Korea from Japan. Should we get an Asian one or just Japan one, then a Sth Korean one. Only in Sth Korea 4nts before heading home.

I got the Asian Explorer as we were doing Japan and South Korea and didn't want to bother with multiple sims. I would recommend the Asian plan for the simplicity.

    • +1 - always been great across 4 trips. Moreover, their support chat via Facebook is awesome and almost instantaneous.

I had a problem in my latest when activating one of the eSims upon landing (user error) and they replied within minutes to solve it before I even left the plane!! It was 8am in Japan and the middle of the night in Melbourne/AU East!

Used Nomad in Japan many times without any issues. Often offer the cheapest esim plans and easy to activate on phone. Uses 5G network

I've been three times, every time I got a pocket wifi from iVideo and the last time (January) I also got an esim from Airalo, it was quite affordable and very convenient. I think I topped up once or twice in the 5 weeks we were there.

    • Thanks.

Ubigi was good it used NTT. You ideally want NTT or SoftBank as thr carrier so check who the eSIM provider uses.

I just got back from a Japan trip (~20 days) and used this sim with 30 days / 20GB validity for ~$30 AUD:

    https://www.klook.com/en-AU/activity/109393-japan-esim-high-…

it was "Redtea mobile" when activated and was very good, 4G everywhere

have also used NTT/Docomo before and it was great

    • That's a pretty good price. We'd be happy with that each I reckon.

We did 3 weeks in Japan last month. I used Instabridge eSim on my Pixel 6a & my wife used Jetpack on her iPhone XL. We chose different brands for redundancy. Price for 10Gb was similar, around $23.

Both installed faultlessly. She ran out of data on day 17; I still had 6Gb left.

    • Good idea using different mobile carriers. We might try that.

Thanks for all the Klook, Ubigi, Nomad and Travelkon recs. Travelkon seems pretty popular and reliable. Maybe a few of us can get that and others Ubigii, Nomad or Klook.
