Wine Decanter - 40th Gift

Hi OzB, good friend's birthday coming up and we ten of us are throwing together about $1k for his present.

Got some inside family knowledge he is chasing a wine decanter.

Does anyone have any recommendations from these guys or shit feedback on if they are any good. There are a few for a $1k which we are looking at but no idea the difference. Is it just design?

Thank you in advance

  • I have the low end Riedel wine & champagne glasses; supremely good drinkware. In case you're open to alternative gifts for wine lovers, Corvin is having a Black Friday sale. I don't own one so regret I can't offer any personal insight.

Include one of these wine aerator's as it can be used when out and about or do not have the time to wait:

We’ve got one from riedel, didn’t realise these had got so expensive
Think we’ve used it once for a Christmas lunch, sure it was cool but a lot of the time it’s just in our wardrobe in storage and we worry about breaking it 😂
Bought my sister a riedel one for her wedding with a horse in it and don’t think they’ve used it at all (looks incredibly cool tho)

I’d hope they’re big into wine to warrant it, wouldn’t advise one that’s too complicated otherwise the space req to store it will be huge.

    • Appreciate your input. Cheers

Riedel stuff is great, never seen a poor product from them.

My main thought though - think about cleaning over fancy design. It looks cool to have a swirly amazing thing going on, but if it's impossible to clean then it's simply not going to get used. I have a fancy looking one that gets used once a year and one that looks like a basic restaurant water carafe that I use a lot more.

    • Agree cleaning is important to consider
Would steer clear of the snake shaped ones unless they’re into snakes (lol) our massive U shaped one is hard enough

    • Thanks for your assistance

  • I'd rather get a $1,000 blender than a $1,000 wine aerator.

Yeah, it's not my decision. I don't drink wine, they do. They are rich, I am not.

      • Well if they use it they'll always think of you when drinking wine, which is nicer than thinking of you when they make a smoothie. You can aerate wine in a blender too tho.

        • About 10 of us putting in. Will def try goon in a blender now mixed with oj or something to bring out the sweetness of the fruity lexia

  • Buy them a wine fridge

    • It was a family suggestion so I'll just stick with it.

      Thank you though.

  • We were gifted this one , have used it a few times and can confirm it is cleanable. Spend the other $600 on glasses or something else.

  • I bought the one Da Kraken has. It’s really excellent esp. for regular use. I ‘won’ a fancy/expensive Riedel I hardly ever use, tho it’s perfect for airing - like this one- ‘Riedel Ultra Handmade Decanter 1.2L. The larger riedel duck 1700/14 is on sale now, & a great looking one while pretty practical. The main cost difference is whether the items are hand blown (usually best quality). Maybe spend the extra on some glasses they don’t have (if you can find out), say 4 or 6 pinot noir glasses. Shop around, as riedel are almost always on sale, esp. in packs
