Telstra TV Loses All Functionality with Shutdown

At first the box may just remove streaming apps, leaving YouTube and media player functionality, but eventually theres a software update that comes and fully bricks it. As I learnt the hard way.

If you disconnect it from internet you can keep the media playing, thanks to the Roku Media Player app, which is what I've done with my second box.
Alternatively you can try blocking domains to prevent bricking and keep streaming apps working.

Shame to kill off perfectly good hardware.

The Fetch TV replacement is trash, IMO. Constantly streaming content, hard to find apps, audio stutter with version file formats.

    • I agree to some extent. Don't know what you mean by hard to find Apps. All the subscription Apps available on Fetch are together accessible by pressing the Apps button on the remote, however, they are limited in number and you can't add any yourself. Better to use Google TV or smart tv. What box is an alternative to record FTA tv?

      • I don't own one but helped a relative set one up.

I couldn't find a easy way to get back to certain apps or a way to place them higher up in the UI. One way to find them involved scrolling past a lot of other apps. I played with it a fair bit but couldn't work out a better way.

I found the whole UI to be mildly naseua involving with transparent panels and content constantly playing.

The plan is to replace it with a Chromecast with Google TV next time we visit.

        I'm not sure about FTA.

I'd just get a new TV with an Android OS

      Or a Google TV device.

    • Nah that's not the ozbargain way. If the screen is alright, just get a google tv dongley-doo. Save ya money.

loved the TTV, sad to see it go. used since inception in 2015.

Fetch replacement is rubbish - laggy UI but admittedly ok for bog-standard app streaming.

Biggest deal breakers for me are 1) no Kayo and 2) Plex app is shite - audio stutter on newer codecs and extemely laggy UI.

Been following reddit/whirlpool for hacks but it seems while you can block the bricking software update, this will only last until the providers make backend tweaks and the apps themselves need updating - days…weeks…maybe a few months at best.

Reflashing the Roku software may happen but i am not sure the TTV - or even the Roku boxes themselves - is popular enough to warrant hackers time on this.

So im of the conslusion I need to get a couple of replacements boxes or HDMI sticks - what do you guys recommend???

Must have nice user experience for Kayo and Plex but dont really want to pay premium for Nvidia Shield/Apple TV, and really only need 1080p for the older TV's in the house…???

    Oh and F%^& you, Telstra!

    • I've used the CCwGTV and Apple TV.

Apple TV was to get rid of advertising and as a bonus allows switching YouTube profile. The experience is really good with Plex.

Chromecast is more than sufficient but I found occasional lag with the interface. I mainly got rid of it because I started getting ads for commercial TV shows in banners.

The fire sticks are worth a look from what I can tell but no personal experience.

  • I blocked outgoing/incoming traffic on my modem for the TTV so Plex and Live TV still works, did this a few weeks ago. We don't use anything else.

Puts Plex into offline mode, which doesn't have all the features, like watch list. But still is fine to use most features such as trailers, ratings update etc. Seems as the server is still connected to the internet it runs well.

Live TV is slow in changing channels and the TV guide doesn't work, but overall at this stage we only use it for ABC Kids.

Waiting on Black Friday sales, hoping the Google Streamer TV goes on sale and I'll pick up a couple of them, otherwise I'll hold on as long as possible.

I feel Plex and Live TV will work long term with modem blocking traffic, because for one Plex allows you to keep a server at a very old version and I will keep my server at the current version until I look for a upgrade in the future.

  • Unbelievable that they just cut off a perfectly working device. Now netflix seems to be slow on my old TCL tv.
