Who Else Takes Metamucil Daily?

I'm 32 YO (healthy, exercise daily) and started taking Metamucil daily about a month ago and I’m pretty impressed by the results.

The first few days were pretty rough but after initial stage my bowel movements have been much more consistent and the experience more pleasing (no need to strain and usually done with my business within a couple of minutes and not much debris when wiping (gross I know)). I think I feel lighter too? Hard to measure this one though.

I’ve suggested this to my mates and they’ve all just laughed at me. Keen to see who else takes Metamucil? And have you noticed any benefits? Do these wear off after a period of time?

I find two carton of farmers union iced coffee on an empty stomach at 20 to 8 in the morning also takes away any possibility of having straining issues.

Don't forget the two potato scallops cakes and a few Winnie blues.*

*Commonly referred to as the Uncle Ian diet

        Uncle Ian diet

Some may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.

Double fisting two Dare Intense iced coffees will get you power shitting in no time. It's like industrial colon blow.

Similar to multivitamins, if you have a poor diet then it will help but you're better off just improving what you eat than taking supplements.

    • +1

Agree - adding vegetables or other fibre would work much better.

Any reason why Metamucil instead of Benefiber or Pysllium husk?

32 is young to start having problems. Have you chatted with your doctor? One I saw was dismissive and said, "you need to drink more", but he did recommend Metamucil, saying "it's made from mushrooms". I suspect he confused psyllium with psilocybin. Bargain a generic medicine fan, I worked it out and avoided Metamucil.

So, read your label. The price of Metamucil covers a lot of marketing smoke & mirrors. In Coles, full price Bonvit Psyllium 500g is $20 compared to Metamucil $39.50 for 673 grams. No false colours, flavouring or other marketing tricks, just psyllium. Occasionally Bonvit comes on special. I think the batch I have unopened in the cupboard from about a year ago was 40% or 50% reduced.

Personally, psyllium is out of the daily routine. Not due to a cure, but a side effect of something else.

32 is never too young to start having problems.

Metamucil has more benefits than just keeping you regular. It can help with keeping cholesterol levels down, it can help lower your risk of getting bowel cancer as majority of people don’t get nearly enough of the daily recommendation of fibre. Plus there’s the regularity thing.

      • My doctor suggested this to me as well to keep cholesterol in check. I'd have to eat two bowls of fibrous vegetables each day to get the equivalent effect of 4 teaspoons of Metamucil.

        • What does the powder taste like?

Would 2 bowls of fibrous veggies be like 500g?

and not much debris when wiping

I've never heard it put in such a way…. LOL

    • Dingleberry is the medical term I believe

          Daggy comment…

  • I used to take Metamucil but after reading the ingredients found it was laden with aspartame (from recollection. It was some artificial sweetener) and didn't want to poison my body with such chemicals. Some may think that's a bit extreme and out there but hey, I'll choose to consume what I want to consume :).

I swapped to plain old psyllium husk. Teaspoon in some water and down the hatch.
    Much cheaper and healthier.

Just eat a banana and some muesli every morning.

  • not much debris when wiping

Ghost poops galore on Metamucil, it's fantastic.

My boyfriend (28M) takes it every day as it helps him a lot. He can be somewhat irregular as he's got a sensitive stomach; metamucil helps relieve some of his pain as well as anxiety around pooping. Your friends don't know what they're missing out on!

a bowl of rolled oats or oat bran each morning will probably achieve the same effect

    • Quick cooking rolled oats are great to have daily. Rolled oats feeds gut bacteria.

Maybe try one of the probiotic mini milks? I have one of these almost every day and while I don't know how good the health benefits are, it is delicious (I buy the lite version).

      • You mean like yakult?

        • That's the one.

    • Is this correct? Oats is a suitable replacement for psyllium husk?

I have oats every morning, but am here to see if psyllium husk would help with the issues I have.
I've been mixing up between almond milk and dairy to see if one of those is causing my issues.

  • Psyllium husk is interesting stuff. Put 3 heaped teaspoons in a bowl, add a little water and wait 30 seconds. It tastes foul, however, thus the Metamucil industry.

I've been doing experiments with my porridge, now abandoned. Psyllium husk turns the porridge into one large piece of flavourless jelly.

  • This is a crappy topic…

I’ve never tried it due to the excessive ingredients but perhaps should considering I have IBS.

    Yogurt works for me :)

BTW capsules are a lot cheaper at iHerb, $14.81 for 160 vs $39-$45.90 at Coles. Ideally you'd add it to your other iHerb items to get free shipping.

Can't beat the price of just the powder itself though.

  • Nope. It gives me the shits

  • I take it every second day, I actually mix it in with a Berocca.
It was suggested I take it because of side effects from the medications I take for some chronic conditions.

Mixing it with Berocca because I like Berocca :)

  • i have been since April, i havent found it made any differance to my bowel movements.

    • +1

Why do you still take it?

      • because i dont know if it actually is… i dont know honestly.

        • Maybe stop for a month and see if you notice a difference?

  • Deep fried potatoes or heavy pasta seems to do it for me.

I am also part of the iced flavoured milk/coffee club.

Thinking about trying metamucil also but knowing me I would just accidentally do both and not know which one actually did it.

I take it when needed but in general I eat loooots of vegetables and I do not need it

  • +1

i used to take Metamucil but since cutting back on red meat & increasing fruit, vegetable & water intake by 200-300% it's no longer needed.

  • I don’t as I’m regular without and get fibre from other sources, however all power to you, it reduces cholesterol too, so a good move, pun intended.

    • Is it the psyllium husk that reduces cholesterol or something else they put in Metamucil?
My cholesterol is also an issue, so will def be trying this (prob a cheaper brand if all the same).

      • Yep it’s the psyllium husk. You could try adding it to your regular diet. But you’d have to be consistent, like have it everyday.. I don’t mind psyllium with yoghurt but I don’t have yoghurt everyday.

  • I'm 35 and mix psyllium husk in with my home made oats and let it absorb overnight with some almond milk and a thin layer of yoghurt, its really nice. My partner has metamucil to make it easier to clean ;-)

Metamucil/psyllium husk can be good if you strain because who wants hemorrhoids…

    • hmmm I think I'll try this.

My wife had be on a breakfast of raw oats, almond milk, greek yogurt and blueberries.
But blueberries are expensive so I now just have cooked oats with almond milk.

Now it's getting warmer I'll go back to cold, with yoghurt.

      • Frozen blue berries left to sit on top overnight work just as well, and a fair bit cheaper than fresh per kg :)

My oat mix for about a week is:
1kg bag rolled oats (so every 4 weeks buy all ingredients but every week in between just another bag of oats)
1/4 bag sultanas or raisins (~1kg bag)
1/4 bag of sunflower seeds (the smallish packs in the cooking aisle)
1/4 bag pepitas (same size as sunflower seeds)
A couple of table spoons of flax seed for omega 3
A couple table spoons of psyllium husk

I pour it into a glass with almond milk nearly to the top, it gets fully absorbed, about 2cm layer of Greek yoghurt and berries on top. Given it’s so filling I probably could have lesss 😅…

I used to like Carmen’s natural Bircher museli but they starte adding so many sesame seeds it smelled gross and gave me reflux.

I had years of bad poops, a while ago, I couldn’t remember the last time I had formed poops. Within a week of more psyllium husk I was doing foot longs regularly that came out 😅vastly different experience

        • Hey cheers for that, I went and bought some psyllium husk (that stuff is expensive - is psyillium hard to grow or something!!??) and yoghurt - I should have checked in here for other ingredients before I went shopping! :)

Just confirming: you put everything togther and leave in fridge overnight, ready to eat next morning??

          • @SlickMick: Yup, just one serving at a time as its pretty easy to make each night. When I do it overnight I put glad wrap over it so it doesn't dry out from the fridge. I find its so much easier to digest as well… I often get reflux eating oats immediately after adding milk.

  • Try kiwifruit. 2 or 3 daily. Whosh!

I'm in my early 40's, been having metamucil since my late 20's. If i go a couple days without it, really start to notice, it becomes like wiping a magic marker lol.

Multiple health benefits, really is great stuff. I switched from flavoured to the original granular version to get away from the Asarptame.

People say "just eat better" but its difficult, even the best diets still only get a fraction of the fiber we got historically.

    • How much g fibre did humans get historically?

  • Op how much metamucil you take a day btw?
