Yes T14s has much better quality however Gen 2 is a bit old (currently T14s AMD is up to Gen 6). Also for virtualisation — are you sure 16GB would be enough? I guess it depends on what you are running VMs for, but usually the more memory the merrier. You can find T14 or T14s with 32GB RAM and slightly older CPU on eBay for about the same price.

  • I have an 8th gen i7 old dell work laptop.with 16gb of ram running:
    proxmox with
    - 1 hassos home assistnat VM
    - 1 lxc with frigate, compreface and doubletake with 6 cameras
    - 1 win11 VM which is what was on the laptop initially, that got virtualised, it does video transcoding for family photos every 7hours for new videos.

What are you going to be doing?
You dont need anything fancy unless you're doing fancy things yourself

    • nothing fancy really..everything is on linux and having 1 daily running like Browsing while another for documentations aka words/spreadsheets and 1 for windows stuff that cant run on linux

      • ok. use $300 fb laptop

  • I'd get minimum 32gb for virtualisation. My current laptop (with 32gb) starts to bog down if I run more than 4-5 vms on it.
If you're only running a couple of vms then 16gb should be ok

  • Just the one VM? Use a privacy-respecting browser in incognito mode for your naughty vids

  • what you guys think of this? $381.65 LENOVO THINKPAD T14 Gen 1, Intel Core i5 10210U, NVMe 256GB, 16GB https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/156457945043?_skw=10210U

    • It's good enough for what you use it for. T14 Gen 1 also has one SIMM slot that lets you upgrade memory (DDR4-2666) later on.
