Dilemma on Career Advice Needed

Hi all, feeling a bit anxious as got let go off a job again.

There was only this warning 2 weeks before I was let go but before that nothing really. I am always that person not able to meet KPIs or that not delivering by putting in 110% effort - generally not putting the overtime and effort to make sure no mistakes.

Is it time to restudy or to find a more basic job like serving customers and basically just clock on and off. Or find that new niche that fits my persona or time to start a business where you don't need to put up with %$%$ with the bosses…

  • Sorry to hear that mate, sounds tough.

What's your job experience and what industry have you been fired in? Do you want to keep working in that space?

    • Open to all opinions mate. I just need to earn that dollar to eat.

  • Hey Op. You need this book -

I listen to the Dave Ramsey podcasts all the time. They often talk about this book on the show

I know it's easier said then done but try and stay focused on what's ahead of you now rather then what's happened. I don't know where you are in your career, how old you are or what industry you work in (I assume you're in your 20-30s and likely work in an office/corporate) but maybe consider if the line of work you are in is really suited to you or if it was this job that just wasn't a good fit?

Corporate can be tough if that's what you do and establishing your own business takes some sacrifice. I know of a lot of friends and family who are in good paying job or have their own business and are otherwise unhappy with because of the pressure it brings and long hours they need to work. You mentioned you don't like doing overtime and are prone to mistakes which indicates you might be in a fast working environment where time management might be a problem. Have you considered working in a more entry role with less focus on KPI's or are there any other industries which interest you and where you can leverage from your experience/strengths?

Time for a job in government? Or learn a trade. Anything will billable hours involved.

or time to start a business where you don't need to put up with %$%$ with the bosses…

To start a business you either need a lot of capital, a lot of skills that are uncommon or put in a lot of time for little reward until you've built up the business. It's way harder than meeting some KPIs, you'd have to really hope that it's your own business will motivate you more than the threat of losing a job seems to currently motivate you.

Good in theory, but for you it will never work because:

Go find a job you enjoy or one that allows for a full NFG attitude (no sarcasm intended in that, there are plenty of jobs you can do that require very little care)

      Any suggestions?

        Politician.

      • Most factory / wharehouse jobs, security, some retail jobs, courier work, council work- just to name a few.

You may think “but those require care”.

Whilst that is true, no one actually really cares when things go wrong, unless they go completely balls up big time - which is relatively rare.

That is a very general statement and some companies will care more than others, but overall there is a general lack of care for quality control in many of those roles.

  • Time to get an outdoors job.

  • generally not putting the overtime and effort to make sure no mistakes

So if you took on an aged carer's role, would you care whether you gave your charge the required pills or not? Would you ditch them on the dot if their pickup was 3 mins late?

  • You can always be a lumberjack
