Shenmue I & II (Cheaper elsewhere)

Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open world action adventure combining jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and memorable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern gaming, including open world city exploration, and was the game that coined the Quick Time Event (QTE). It was one of the first games with a persistent open world, where day cycles to night, weather changes, shops open and close and NPCs go about their business all on their own schedules. Its engrossing epic story and living world created a generation of passionate fans, and the game consistently makes the list of “greatest games of all time”.

Epic have given away Shenmue III in the past.

But could you drive a forklift?

Doesn't say that in the description of the deal.

        @belongsinforums

Shenmue 1 is a tad over a year after OoT.

        Shenmue 1 — 29 December 1999 (JP).
Zelda: Ocarina of Time — 21 November 1998 (JP).

Shenmue's Weather used the inspired locations' weather data for the period during which the game is taking place.
Shenmue 1&2 is super groundbreaking for what it is and what it did at its initial release/ does with the medium. (also OoT, just differently)

Shenmue actually has a purpose to the day night cycles though. The days and dates actually change and the town reflects that.

  • VEND!

Excuse me, do you know where I can find some sailors?

Would you like to play a game of Lucky Hit?

    • Ryo: "On the day the snow turned to rain, did you see a black car?"

  • HELLO RYO

  • I remember when Shenmue 3 was announced and revealed at the Sony conference! epicness awaited finally being made!
I bought Shenmue 3 shortly after release intending to play it asap….

However, after reading about how much of a letdown it apparently is (and that it wasn't even the story's conclusion), I let it rest for now in fear of tarnishing the epicness of 1&2.

I might wait until 4 (hopefully the final one) when it comes out….or when 3 is miraculously fixed….(or when I'm possessed by the missus to play it (soon)…or possessed by the 'floating sword' or 'Pheonix mirror'.)

Brother, I don’t think 4 is ever going to be made

My understanding is that Shenmue 3 isn't modernised in any way. It plays as if it was made straight after 2, which includes a lot of jank that modern games have long since done away with. I was disappointed enough that I didn't even try it. And I had the first two on Dreamcast!

      • I can see how that can be bad to some… would have been nice to have super realistic graphics as well.

I didn’t find that jank off putting, personally. (In fact if they did it in Dreamcast graphics I’d be just ok as well)

What really is putting me off is the story isn’t going anywhere in 3…. What happened to the floating sword in at the end of 2 was supernatural stuff. Then beginning of 3 (it’s no where to be seen) seems to pretend like it didn’t even exist.

        • Yes they certainly left things on the cutting room floor. Considering 3 was a miracle, maybe 4 will be like Half Life 3 and get released as a script.

        • I played about 4-5 hours of 3 on the PS4 shortly after it came out, and it wasn't great. I did it right after playing 1 & 2, so the issue wasn't the jank. It was more that nothing happens. As you said, 2 ends on a pretty big note, and 3 just sort of goes "Meh, who cares." From what I've read there's no actual story beats or info until the last 25% of the game.

  • These games have always been on my "to do" list, thanks. Btw the Shenmue Orchestra Version ost is incredible, definitely worth a listen if you're a fan.

  • +2

Shenmue 1 & 2 are classics and will always hold a special place, shenmue 3 on the other hand was such a let down. I was one of the suckers that put money into the kick starter campaign and was left dissatisfied as the story went no where.

Such a shame as it had potential to be so much better which would have secured funds for the next chapter.

  • Are these worth playing if I’ve only played some of the Yakuza series?

    • +2

You could probably call the Yakuza games spiritual successors to Shenmue in that they're big, sprawling stories with lots of characters, places and things to do. However, even the older titles in the series (which now I guess would be Yakuza 3-5 as they remade 1 and 2 and they're still quite slick) play a lot better than Shenmue does now, at least for me. Also I remember the review in Hyper Magazine back when the first Shenmue released described Ryo's running animation as looking like he had a 'carrot up the date'.

      • Haha Hyper magazine. That brings back memories. Thanks for the insights.

  • Shenmue III was free from Epic Games Store so double check you have that in your library before purchasing it. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/670658

    • I has it

  • I still have the Dreamcast version of Shenmue. I wonder how much it's worth now. For some reason , I couldn't get into it,

    • I had both 1 and 2 - the second was quite rare as it never got a US release until the Xbox version, and it had Japanese voice acting with English subtitles, something the Xbox release didn't have (they redubbed with English and it was as stilted as the original). I dabbled in both but a mate came and stayed with me and clocked the original on my Dreamcast, he enjoyed it at least. I remember watching him drive the forklift.

    • If it's in good condition you may be looking at around $100 or so.

  • Shenmue is one of my Favourite games ever

    Remember playing 1 & 2 on my Dreamcast, then 2 on XBOX and then 1 & 2 on PS4, then 3 on PS4/5 and then 1 & 2 on XSX

    Love it!

    Wish it was on Switch

You’ve seen quite a lot of sailors in your time lol

      • Hahahaha
