From arguably the most sought after part of McLaren Vale, Blewitt Springs, come this single-vineyard wine from 30-year-old, dry-grown vines from soil that's 11,700 years old.
"From the sandy soils of the family’s vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region, fermentation of the two varieties was done discretely, followed by subsequent blending. With eight days on skins before pressing to older French hogsheads for eight months maturation. Vibrant purple, this is still very young but delightfully fresh. Notes of plums, dark berries, smoked meats and florals, there is an attractively supple texture with decent length and very soft tannins. Like this a lot. Delicious now and for the next three to four years. 92." Wine Pilot 2024
Region: Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale
Story: The Shiraz and Tempranillo for this wine are from the Lot 94 BSR vineyard which Bec and Richard acquired in mid-2022. This wine is a lovely marriage between rich, plush Shiraz fruits and the aromatic spicy perfume of Tempranillo. The pairing of these varieties delivers generous but approachable wine perfect either for food or just on its own.
Vineyard: Grown on the 11,700 years old deep sandy soils of the Lot 94 BSR vineyard located on Blewitt Springs Rd in Blewitt Springs. The Shiraz and Tempranillo on this vineyard grow side by side and are on an east-facing slope. This whole vineyard is dry-grown and was originally planted by Bec’s father Geoff Hardy in the early 1990s.
Harvest Date: Shiraz - 3 April 2023, Tempranillo – 7 March 2023
Winemaking: The two varieties were crushed, destemmed and fermented separately. The grapes spent 8 days on skins during fermentation in small open fermenters before being pressed directly to seasoned French oak hogsheads. Aged 8 months in oak before blending and bottling. Early release to maximise freshness.
Nose: The nose is a fragrant punch of black cherry, raspberry, and savoury spice.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied palate with attractive soft round red berry fruits. These fruit flavours are complimented by lifted spice aromatics and smooth supple tannins. Hints of oak from 8 months maturation in seasoned French oak round out a lovely balanced palate.

I've never had a Shiraz Tempranillo.
what does the tempranillo do to the shiraz? does it just smooth it out like a merlot and a cab-merlot?
