What Happens to Amazon Returns?

My Sunbeam coffee machine has partially died within my warranty period (water leak). Amazon has sent me a replacement machine and asked that I send the faulty one back.

I recall vaguely that most Amazon returns end up in landfill but I could be mistaken. Can anyone confirm this?

If they are going to throw it away, I'll hang onto it to attempt a repair.

EDIT
Thank you everyone for your responses. Back to Amazon it goes.

  • Was that machine sold by Amazon directly or some third-party seller?

    • Amazon direct

      • Yeah, quick assessment and then off to the clearance pile.

Anyways, SydStrand has already addressed it quite accurately.

Not suggesting you're trying to scam them but many others are; one reason (among many) faulty/defective items have to be returned.

They get on-sold by the pallet, usually to third parties who use them to stock refurb stores, and occasionally to random people. There's an entire cottage industry built around this.

    • but nothing in au its all in USA?

      • Definitely happens here too. I know a company in Moorabbin that does this.

Is that the place in Keys Rd with all the Amazon boxes in the window?

@mapax: My guy’s located right next to the airport, he has warehouses all over, he sorts his good out and sells them on EBay or directly to shops.

It no longer belongs to you once they've replaced it.

It's not yours to hold on to

  • I'm sure they have an algorithm that tells them what they should do with it to make/save themselves the most money. Often I bet it's "throw it in the bin" or "resell it to anyone who'd want this crap in bulk" like SydStrand says. Bet it has special cases built in where they send it back to the supplier, or where it's checked and restocked. Like that little Britain sketch where the computer says no, wouldn't surprise me if it's all automated and just broadly monitored by people.

Ffs, why is this even a question.

“What happens to Amazon returns?” - They repackage what they can, and resell the item as brand new to other customers… The packaging for some returned items are resealed with shrink wrap using an impulse sealer and a heat gun making it appear to be manufacturer factory sealed.

um yeah I thought this was the correct answer.

if you click "other options" on certain items they even have the item sold by amazon but much cheaper with "New" or "Used" written with details like unopened package, damaged package, cosmetic damage on item, I think the worst is (Used) with cosmetic/physical damage but functioning but I don't think anyone buys that one. I have to say it was really common during covid for me to score a almost brand new item for much less.

so yeah not all of it is junked. I have to say if they are putting items on pallets to sell, it's probably the seriously damaged and broken ones they can't sell those to customers because they would get complaints. or maybe returned items that have to be clean to sell, like that cheap ear cleaner someone posted.
