Is this an ozbargain favourite? Looking for a couple of atleast 4 socket surge protectors

    • +13

No. For years there’s been reports of the plugs being loose. Honestly not sure why it keeps getting posted.

      • thanking you.

      • I've had 2 of these and both have had loose ports.

      • +1

FWIW I have 4 of these, bought at different times over the past 10-11 years, and had exactly zero issues to this day.

        • +1

I own 4 of these as well!! I also haven't had any issues with loose ports on mine, but I also have all four of mine for important uses like the PC/laptop and TV - ones where the 2750J surge protection will help a bit more than most other boards we can get here that are in the range of 150-750J surge protection. And also use cases where I don't plug in/out devices frequently - so these have been perfect for my use case. They also feel a whole lot more sturdier than other powerboards I've owned over the years bar one really OLD powerboard I've owned that was built like a tank but I lost it during a move :(

I can't vouch for how well these ACTUALLY do in a surge situation though, but, for plugged in and forget type use, these have been good - and hopefully does give a little bit more protection than the ones with lower surge ratings at the end of the day! 🤷

I also had loose ports on this model.
        Trash.

      • ive got 4 of them around the house and the trick is to push hard and slightly wiggle to get the plugs to go in fully otherwise they will be sitting there loose because they are not fully inserted

        • If there’s a “trick” involved with a power board, that’s a pretty good sign you shouldn’t be using it. Just my opinion.

          • +1

@PainToad: The "trick" is you actually have to insert the plug properly, so it sits very tight, while if you don't push it in properly, it could be loose. Maybe people need simpler instructions on how to insert a plug into a socket. I have a feeling that's why some people claim the sockets are loose on these.

I can't claim to know what other Ozbargainers are thinking, but the impression I have gotten from other posts is that the Belkin surge protectors are better.

Got one ages ago and have never had issues with it

    • Seems to vary per store, some $25 some $24

  • +3

Specs seem pretty good 2750joules surge suppression. I would normally try to aim for 3000 or more. I wouldn't go near those Belkin ones as they only provide an awesome 900joules of surge suppression.

    • +3

There was one linked earlier that did only 150joules lol. Just about blow on it and activate the surge protection 😂

    • +2

The Belkin units vary depending on the model from memory. Given the quality of this unit, 2750 seems suss as well… the Belkin at least includes a connected device warranty.

  • Um . Cyberpower returned to ozb?

  • If you have access to GCC, Belkin 6 Port 650 Joules $23. At least you know it's genuine 650 Joules. Also better built, more solid reputation. Comes with $30,000 connected warranty.

  • question: don't most homes have built in surge protection? for those that might know necessarily know and buy this for surge protection

    • Hey mate, I just noticed no one answered your question - no, the standard residential switch boards do not have a requirement to have surge protection. It is an extra breaker you can install though, but it might need a switchboard upgrade depending on what switchboard you have. Mine is at the limit of what it can handle and needs an upgrade to add surge protection at the switchboard - I already asked this from a sparkie.

Simply put, the standard circuit breakers required by law protect against short circuits on home side / load side of the switchboard. These circuit breakers required by law do not protect against power surges from the supply side.

That's why having a decent surge protection power board is the absolute minimum you can do to provide some protection to your more fragile/expensive electronics, BUT getting the switchboard upgrade is definitely the more superior option - but can be an expensive electrical project.
