Seeking New Headphones to Replace Sony WH-1000XM5

Hi everyone,

I have a set of Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. The sound is great and the ear pads fit nicely around my ears, even with my hearing aids in.
But, like so many others, one of the swivels broke and I can no longer wear thr headphones.
I'm not happy, because the sound and all that is fine, but I can't fix/replace the swivel, so they keep falling off my head.
Replacing the whole band, is nearly as expensive as a whole new set of headphones.

I usually love Sony products, but to throw out a perfect working set of headphones, simply because the swivel can't be fixed or replaced, doesn't sit right with me.

Can anyone recommend a brand and model, with similar ear pad sizing and sound quality, but with a better build quality?
Preferably under $400,-

TIA

You can get replacement hinge parts for ~$30.

Before that, I would be kicking up a stink to Sony Support to get it covered under warranty and/or consumer guarantee.

    • Where? I can only find $200+ and they're all in the US

        Aliexpress or similar China-based stores.

Find someone with a 3D printer?

Edit- that's for a slightly different model number. No idea if it'll still fit.

    • Thanks. Unfortunately, it's very different to what I have. The XM5 has round connections.

Have you tried the various store demo models? Head size, clamping force and headband comfort are all important. I recall a friend back in the day choosing Bose NC 700 over Sony WH-1000XM3 because Bose have deeper ear cups. Bose sells refurbished Bose QuietComfort Ultra but I'm sure there are lower prices to be found elsewhere.

    • Currently have a fractured knee and unable to drive.
I'll have to wait for a few weeks and then I'll head to JB Hifi. Maybe they'll have good deals for black Friday.

BOSE QC45 all the way. Avoid the Senheizer brand, they are over priced and the internals fail often (speaking from experience).

      Sennheiser's mainstream ANC headphones, yeah

Their audiophile stuff literally lasts forever

      Senheizer

Stop buying the Aliexpress knockoffs, you want Sennheiser.

It was a spelling as typing from my phone. I meant Sennheiser. The 4 replacements I've got come from head office Sennheiser, not from AliExpress

Not bad an issue with my Sony pair. Downfall if they fail (like apple), is they go away for repair if faulty.
    Jbl are replaced in store?

  • They didn't fail per se. They still work. It's the hinge that broke and they call it user error. I already spoke to Sony. It's a waste of money to throw them out, when it's just a hinge issue.
But looking online, I'm not the first one to have had the hinge break so easily.
It's disappointing, as they're not the cheapest headphones.

  • Just noticed this not inexpensive repair service via eBay

    • Yeah, I saw that before. I am considering this as one of 2 options.
Though, $175,- is not all that cheap. My concern is that they'll send it back by regular parcel and that it may break further during transport. I'm not in Victoria.

I might wait for the Black Friday sales as well. I did some research and it seems the Sennheiser Momentum 4, is of equal sound quality, but much better build quality.
If anyone has any feedback on the Sennheiser Momentum, I'd greatly appreciate it. The more the better.
