SHADEY10

Hi Ozbargainers,

Long time lurker, first time brand representative.

We've just launched our new brand - Shadey!
We make custom made curtains, blinds and shutters that you can order online, with simple DIY install.

To celebrate our launch we're doing 10% off our already low prices - use code SHADEY at checkout.

Before you order feel free to grab some free samples (with free shipping).

We stock several of the same fabrics as other really popular brands, but we're around 20% cheaper than the big names because there's just 2 of us running the show - and that's before the 10% off.

I'm typically a non-handy person, but the first time I tried installing blinds, I got it straight away. I'd never used a drill before - but it's legit super easy.
Our website is new, but we've been in the industry for 10 years.

So if you need made to measure curtains, blinds or shutters check us out!

Feel free to ask us anything about curtains, blinds, shutters too - our personal accounts have been lurking around Ozbargain for years and we love this community.

Do blackout blinds really work? Don't quite see how they can stop light leakage at the edges well enough to be truly blackout?

    • +2

Blackout curtains that go wall to wall and floor to ceiling are the best bet for full light removal

If you want 100% blackout then you need to search for "channel blinds" - no roller blind will give zero light leakage.

We don't have them - but basically you have to install a frame within your window frame - so you need a decent recess, and lose a couple cm of window size.
I personally don't like the look of them but to each their own

Most Curtains, Blinds & Shutters stores will give you 10% off if you ask nicely.

Also no examples of any bargains reads more like using OzB for free adz.

      Hey WatchNerd,

Yes - often bricks and mortar stores will do that - however, they usually insist on installing for you - which is fine if you want to pay for installation, but for people who want to save money by measuring and installing themselves, DIY 100% online options are great.

It's really hard to do a direct comparison because each company uses their own styles of curtain tracks, hems etc and because they are made to measure each company has a different minimum size and therefore starting price however I've found a 'close enough' comparison for you with a premium fabric called Burano in Ivory for a 1500mmx1500mm curtain

      DIY Blinds
$569 + Free shipping for limited time (usually $50)

      The Curtain Dept
$428 + $49 Shipping (no free option, and less options to customise)

      Shadey with discount
      $421.20 +$49 Shipping (or free over $499)

These were the only 3 stores I could find selling this particular product via ecommerce.

  • very timely - just about to do an entire double storey house with window coverings. When will this code expire? cheers. Prices look very competitive compared to a few sites I've been checking.

    • Hey Cohagen,

      Code expires on 1 December.
Feel free to reach out on email or via contact form on the website if you need any help :)

We also offer free samples - so plenty of time to grab some samples, measure your windows and order before the code expires.

      • thanks mate, that's awesome ! sorry one last question… are the roller blinds on 38mm tubes? thx

        • We use 43mm diameter tubes up to 2500m wide, then 49mm from 2500-3000m to provide extra stability.

  • I've got single-glazed windows, and the road noise and insulation are pretty bad. In lieu of installing double-glazed windows, I've heard that some curtains or blinds can do a good job insulating and sound proofing. Any suggestions? Thanks

    • You need thick, heavy drapes. I don't think shadey sells those.

    • +1

Great question - to be honest, nothing is going to be as good as double glazing.
Anecdotally, some people say that blackout curtains and/or shutters have made a difference, but others say they don't notice a difference.
Blackout curtains would be a good option for dampening sound in an echoey room though, however there's no noise reduction rating (NRC) to support this.

We don't offer it, but the only fabric I'm aware of with a NRC rating is a product called Bumph. I believe it's got a 0.8 NRC but it's super bulky (so doesn't fold nicely into a curtain) and up there price wise.

Regarding insulation the best product we offer is honeycomb blinds as the honeycell structure can trap air providing great insulation.

      • Thanks for the responses everyone, very helpful. Now considering going with honeycomb blinds for blackout and some sheer curtains across the entire wall for privacy

  • Are you guys based in Melbourne? And what’s the rough turnaround time for roller blinds?.

    • Thanks for the message. Yes, we're based in Melbourne but ship across Australia. Our lead time for roller blinds is 7 business days for production then delivery within 1-2 days for metro areas. Usually next day for Melbourne-based customers. We also ship our free samples next day.

  • Can you please tell me the measurements of the track for sheer curtains? I have a recessed ceiling niche and need to make sure the width and height of the track will fit and be hidden.

Also, your maximum track length is 5750mm. Are you able to go longer than 5750mm?

    Thanks.

    • +1

Our recommended curtain track for a ceiling fit is the Designer track. The measurements of the track are 24mm depth x 11m height. Ceiling niches are a great feature - it depends on what heading you're looking to use for the curtain whether the curtain will fit within the niche.

For an S-Fold curtain as the fabric forms an 'S' where fabric is positioned at both the front and back of the track, we recommend the niche has 150mm depth within it to allow for the folds of the curtain to not make contact with the niche when in open & closed positions.

For the other heading types (Pinch Pleats & Pencil Pleat) the fabric is only positioned at the front of the track when installed and as such requires less depth in the niche of 110mm.

On our website we have a limit of 5750mm, however we can definitely make larger width curtains. Feel free to send us a message on the contact form or live chat, we'd be happy to help.

Do you offer any motorised options? I couldn't see any? Can you recommend a particular motor brand that will work well with your curtains /rails and uses ZigBee and compatible with/integrates well with Home Assistant? Would like to automate blackout curtains, so they will weigh a bit more than your average curtain.

    • +1

Great question. We currently only have an Acmeda motor for roller blinds, though looking to add some more motorised options in future. For a ZigBee compatible motorised curtain option, I know Somfy offer a range of ZigBee compatible motors which sync via their Tahoma Hub. It's a fairly recent inclusion to their range so not 100% sure whether it includes their curtain motor range.

      • Hey Shadey,

I was actually just looking for motorised blinds so this is perfect timing, I might be missing something but I can't find the option to add the motor on the website?

Is there any other details such as USB type, battery, wifi/app or just remote?

        • Hey Sleepyowl,
We're going to have motors added as a control option for roller blinds on the website by the end of the week but you can send us a message on the contact form with how many roller blinds you're after and we can provide a quote that way.

The motor we stock is the Acmeda Automate 2.0 Zero battery motor. Charging port is Micro USB, usually a full charge will last at least 6 months. 5 or 15 channel remotes are available. Also can be linked to Acmeda's Pulse Hub for home automation features. Or 3rd party hubs like Bond Bridge which Acmeda motors are compatible with.
