I've been on the look out for a dashcam. The Viofo A119 is great bang for buck. Here it is $155 with 18% cashback 0% via Shopback, should take it down to about $127. Use BLITZ to get the $10 off.

There are other options which include eg, the circular polarising lens, for about another $15.

I think this is a decent deal but I'm still a bit on the fence - the Mini 2 is better, but more expensive, but there may also be good deals coming up for singles day on 11 November. Or you could use this upcoming AliExpress deal to get the Viofo A119 for about $110. It's up to you!

    2019…

There is better bang for buck with 70mai.

    • -2

I tried the 70mai 200 and it didn't work for me, although in hindsight this may have been because I used it with a 512GB SD card and I think it says the max is 128 GB.

    • +2

70mai uses battery instead of capacity which was a big turn off for me.

      • +3

somehow my 70mai still working fine since buying 6 years ago

        • Never had issues with any lithium batteries I've had in any of my cars. The whole capacitor needed in Australian sun thing is a sales gimmick.

      • +2

Lithium-ion battery under hot Australian summer sun is a no for me too. Capacitor all the way.

      • What's a capacitor?

My main concern with getting a dashcam is that they either have an onboard battery that isn't big enough to capture footage when parked ie if someone damages your car while you have parked it - and if you attach to your 13v starter car battery, it is one software glitch away from draining it and leaving you stranded.

        • Get a battery like a Cellink Neo

        • +1
          • @spaceflight: Those have been canned in favour of the Blackvue battery

          • @spaceflight: I have read about those, but I'm nervous as to how reliable they are. If the low voltage cut off doesn't work, it could be a disaster

            • @y2k: The 70mai and Viofo hardwire kits have multiple settings (something like 12.5v, 12v, 11.4v) for shutoff. 'Most' engines should crank over 10-12v but I believe 12v is recommended.

        • +1

          Don't know about this viofo.

But my viofo a139 has a hardwire kit (optional extra) which is used to cut off power to the camera once the car battery drops down to a certain amount, and it's not software that determines that.

So if a software glitch does happen and the camera chooses to stay on, this optional extra has a failsafe cutoff so that it doesn't drain the battery, so you won't be stranded.

    • This.

I recently ordered 70mai A510, it was the Sony Starvis 2 sensor for a 'reasonable' price that won me over. Closest Viofo was twice the price and they don't even have ADS.

Even tho I'll never use it, I also like that it has 4g cloud with which you can track the dashcam location, view live recording etc.

The only thing the 70mai was missing is supercapacitor, but even if the internal battery dies; my understanding is my hardwire kit will keep it going anyway. I've read the battery should last around the 3 year mark.

There is a HUGE difference between the starvis 1 and the starvis 2 (especially license plate read-ability).

      • How much did you pay for your A510? Still happy with it?

Thinking of pulling the trigger on one later today in the 11/11 sale on AliExpress, with either voucher or cashback stacked on top of the reduced price…

        • +1

I only just received it end last week, haven't installed it in the car yet lol. But I have plugged it in and done test records inside my house.

          Some things I noticed:
Not much difference in filesize between resolutions:
          30sec video
          2592x1944 30fps=98.5MB
          2560x1440 30fps=95.6MB
          1920x1080 30fps=89.4MB

Picture seems fine, I do notice the compression on my 27" 1440p monitor; wasn't any real noticeable difference between 1944 vs 1440 but that may change on the road. Audio quality is good. Text readability was good (tried paper+pc monitor and moving the camera around in my hand)

The unit itself the mount and the screen got decently warm especially for cool inside house ambient temp.

Phone app works great and transferred files faster than I thought it would, it was a little finnicky as the dashcam creates a hotspot that you then connect to via your phone; being in my house with my internet wifi the phone kept disconnecting to connect to home wifi. You can just plug the dashcam straight into your pc and it will show up to copy files (can't use supplied cable, had to use my phone cable). A firmware update was available & was easy to install (it downloads and installs via the phone app).

Everything packed well and build quality seems pretty good.

Will be installing it sometime this week. Compared to many of the Aussiedashcam videos for far more expensive dashcams (blackvue etc) I think it's worth it (I paid $230 for the A510+rear cam direct from their website). Using Samsung 256GB EVO Plus sd card I scored from officeworks for $39.

          • @A-mak: Thank you so much! I didn't expect such a detailed review, you're amazing!

I'm feeing good about the purchase now :-)

I'll pull the trigger. I have purchased from that particular AliExpress seller before and know they are reliable and send genuine products. And I know the app, the old dashcam I got from that seller is a 70mai as well. All good :-)

  • I tried 70mai. It completely died after 12 months. My guess is the battery in Australian heat, due to some weird behaviour before it died.. My next model will likely be this Viofo as it uses a capacitor and is less susceptible to heat damage.

  • I was gonna say it’s cheaper on Ali express, $107 and even cheaper with the codes. But looks like it’s back to $150 now. Ali seems like the best place to get this one when it’s on sale

  • Is there a back and a front camera for viofo?

    • +1

Viofo have several models that incorporate 2 or even 3 camera system. More expensive of course.

Just bear in mind that depending on your car installing a rear camera may require drilling of the bodywork to install.
I bought a couple of dual camera setups, but only installed on the one where the rear could be mounted without drilling, since I had concerns about the long term implications of an installer drilling a hole in the bodywork.

      • Why would a hole be needed to be drilled?

      • Wtf lol, not true necessarily.

      • I have had several two camera dash cams in several different cars over the last 15 years and never had to drill into the bodywork, they all have come with a double sided tape bracket that is secured to the glass.

      • I think he meant the rear camera with reverse parking sensor capability?

      • -1

Just replying here as it may have been the installer rather than the kit itself, but where the wiring comes into the rear hatch/door in between the metal skin panels, there wasn't really an option to bring the cable out at the top of the rear window without drilling a small hole in the inner skin and installing a grommet.
Maybe the installer could have run some conduit to the face of the hatch, but this would have interfered with the seal.
Anyway, for 2 of my cars I was told the only way to install the rear camera was to drill a hole, so I chose not to install the rear camera.
        Your mileage may vary.

        • That is your installer, not your 2 cars…..

          • @Jessie Ryder: Entirely possible, but if anyone has a rear camera on a VW up i'd love to know how they ran the cable.
Who does everyone else use for these fancy no-drill installs?

            • +1

              @sirsavesabit: I do.
My mate with technical expertise helped.
Front left of the rear view mirror. All along the left ceiling edge till it finally meets in the rear glass. All hidden, but an extra long bit of cable for when the door opens. For a first time diy, I'd give it a 8/10

  • I have 118 but wish it had rear and interior options

  • It's a great budget camera. I find the video to be better than the Blackvue 750X that I have just binned due to malfunctioning too.

  • +1

I've had the v2 since 2020 and still going strong

    • Mine died after a year

  • +6

I've had the V3, but if you can stretch your budget go for the Mini 2. Starvis 2 is miles ahead when it comes to licence plates at night recognition.

    • +3

Starvis 2 is where it's at. It's HDR footage is far superior when all the number plates are glowing at night due to reflections.

      • +1

And its also usbc. So that'll be worth it if you ever need to change dashcams and have things hard wired in. No adaptor on adaptor

    • Does the mini 2 have duo front and back?

      • No. You have to buy two and each only works independently.

  • +2

I just installed the A329 2 channel that was released in America two weeks ago.
The installer was impressed with the video quality, especially for the price.
They ship to Australia in under a week, I contacted Viofo Australia and they don't know when they will have this model in stock.

    https://www.viofo.com/products/viofo-a329-2ch-first-4k-60fps…

    • +3

Viofo Australia got the A329 two weeks ago when I checked. https://www.viofo.com.au/product/a329-2ch/

      • When I was about to order mine I contacted them and they said we don't know when we will get the A329 in Australia.
They probably knew when but they just said that as it wasn't officially available at the time.
So I ordered mine via the USA site, paid $616 AUD for the A329 two camera dash cam, hardwire kit and a 256GB SD card delivered.

        • @Seaeagles - Did you use a discount code for this price? I just added A329 2 Ch + 256 go card + HK4 kit and total comes to AUD $751. Thanks.

    • Nice, mines arriving this week but have been running the A229 Pro in 3 channel for the last year or so. Also got the telephoto camera that was released for it.

Viofo are top of the game without a doubt.

  • Can a pair of viofo mini 2s be installed i.e one in front and one in back and hardwired using hk4 kit? I know the overhead of two sdcards etc but happy to do that as rear cameras are usually not that great.

    • Would like to know if this is possible as well.

    • The HK4 hardware parking kit can only connect to one camera at a time, so if you have two Viofo Mini 2 then you will need to purchase two HK4 kits and connect to the car fuse box. But you are happy for just one Mini 2 (e.g. front camera) to be activated during parking, then you just buy one HK4 kit.

      • Thanks mate, apologies for a dumb question (no idea how car electronics work) but does car fuse box has multiple sockets available for two kits?

        • +1

You need to read your car manual as to which fuses on the fuse box are the correct one to tap into. Usually you need to tap into those fuses that remained switch on after the car ignition has been switched off, so there will be constant power supplied to the dash cam for its parking mode. You will need to read on internet to gain knowledge how to install it e.g. sign up to DashCamTalk forum where there will be discussion how to. If you still don't know how to do it, then pay an auto-electrician to install them for you, better be safe rather than you shorting out your car electrical circuit.

  • I'm waiting for a deal for A329. It's a lot more expensive but it seems to excel in doing what it is supposed to do

  • -2

    Don't do it!

I bought two complete Viofo A129 Pro Duo's for the cars about 3 years ago, 4K front/1080p rear. BOTH SETS COMPLETELY DEAD within about 14 months. Both dead after summer. I thought spending that much money (nearly $600 each at the time, their top of the line at the time) meant quality. So many glowing reviews online.

    JUNK.

And its not like I'm in the tropics or desert… only Canberra for goodness sake! Australia's summer kills these cheap imports FAST!

Stick with other brand name models.

    • Even bloody $800 blackvues deads in Aussie summer , let alone $300 viofo that do better image processing. It is the weather brah, not a specific product. Check online to see how many premium brands that failed in the heat. All 4k cam these days generate heaps of heat when running, so I park mostly under the direct sunlight whenever I can in summer to avoid your situation.

      • Mate, Canberra summer…. talking mid 30's, and the last few haven't been hot at all! I don't expect miracles, but to not even give me 18m on both is pretty piss poor.

    • I've had a Viofo A129 Duo in my car since 2020.

Zero complaints at all, and that's unusual for me.

Personally I'd be nervous about 4k cameras in general (of any brand) because of the extra heat generated, as 4k is 4x the pixels of 1080p.

  • I recently both the 70mai xiaomi a500s with front and rear cam ($170 on Amazon) pretty happy with it. I've had no drive d01 for many years and had no issues, however the internal battery (or capacitor) does work and it has to be plugged in, so I hard wired it.
