Any Footbridges Bridges over Lane Cove River?

I want to cycle to Macquarie Park, Macquarie University or North Ryde metro stations. However the only way across Lane Cove River is De Burgh's bridge, which is pretty dangerous for a beginner cyclist. One mistake, and you'll get run over by a car.

I can cross any any point in the river in this image. Epping bridge is too far.

I checked google for any foot-bridges, and have been unsuccessful. Cycling maps, hiking trails and google maps show nothing. Do any locals know of any hidden bridges?

Dismount your bike and walk across.

      pic plz

    • Entire ryde road is dangerous. Cycling on road is suicidal, and cars may exit driveways, so footpath is not an option.

It'll be 1km walk, before cycling is safe. I'ddo more walking than cycling.

      • Slowly on the footpath could be an option. You shoukd be able to travel faater than walking pace but alow enough you can stop quickly if a car exits a driveway.

If you ride the road, claim the lane. Dont ride right over at the gutrer to 'allow cars to pass' as it just invites them to squeeze by when there isnt enough room for both of you in the lane. It also allows you some escape space if someone does pass too close.

AIUI, riding on the footpath as an adult is only legal if you are accompanying minors.

Sure, lots of people do it, that doesn’t mean it's something I'd consider as part of a regular commuting plan.

If the bridge itself is the concern, ride to the bridge, dismount, walk the bike on the footpath to cross the bridge, then re-mount and continue the ride?

          • @hudrob: Yes, should have pointed out that riding footpath is not legal if youre over 16 in NSW.

Having said that, im willing to take the risk and ride a footpath section in preference to the road on occasion - including my morning commute. A section of my morning commute is up hill, often into the rising sun with 2 narrow lanes and no shoulder. The footpath is far safer.

If you dont ride like a tosser, i highly doubt a police officer would bother you for riding the footpath. Give way to pedestrians, including riding off the path as necessary, keep the speed down and noone will bat an eye. I see no reason not to bend the rule, especially if there are no, or very few, pedestrians.

        • Actually it's not a footpath. It's a biking path. It's just really thin, like a footpath, and there are some suburb streets I can go on, to avoid cars

I'm concerned about this path. Looks pretty thin. If I (profanity) up, I'll end up on Ryde road.

Kinda concerned about that. If I fall, I'd like to fall on a footpath, or grass, so I don't have to worry about cars running me over

@Degeneracy: If its wide enough for a footpath, you should be able to ride it. Just go have a practice when you arent in a rush.

Id ride that any day in preference to detouring elsewhere.

  • Use google maps and show the satellite layer then zoom in and go up and down the river to see what crossing there are. I do this when i need to figure out where things are.

    • Yeah I did that. No bridges :( Was just hoping that there was a small bridge. Can't believe across a 5 meter wide river, there's not a single footbridge

Then you are out of luck.

There is a way to cross the river from Lane cove river footpath to Christie park. I’ve done it, but depending on recent weather you may have to wade up to waist deep.
It’s not a bridge. But stepping stones.
Don’t recommend taking a bicycle as the river runs at the bottom of a very steep valley. It’s a National Park for a very good reason

    • Yup. I've been there too!

Was debating whether to take my bike, but the cliff is very steep and bike is too heavy for me to carry

I was panting with just my bag lmao

Inside the National Park, not far from Delhi Road entrance is a causeway you can use to cross the river. You’d enter from Lady Game Drive, cross the causeway and I’d then ride up through the National Park on the Western side of the river until Plassey Road. Go up that hill and you’ll come out basically at North Ryde station.
