Feedback from anyone who's done this?

    • +1

This could be outdated since it's last updated 5 yrs ago. This one seems to work

  • +1

    weird but it works

  • I don't even want it but this is truly brilliant.

i hate to ask but is there any risk of being banned for doing this?

    • +5

It's not a bad question. I think the risk is super low/non-existent.

These work because the dev/publisher did a giveaway and either forgot or just didn't bother properly 'disabling' it.

It doesn't look like any of them are worth risking it for.

    • Banned from steam?

    • +3

I seriously doubt you'd be banned. It's not hacking or anything remotely like that. AddFreeLicense is one of Steam's many console commands. I've used it several times with no problems. I think the worst outcome is the games are removed from your library. But they're old free games so who cares? The risk of bad publicity is not worth it and they'll just let sleeping dogs lie.

      • Oh so they will just removed the games in op post?

I was worried they might remove the whole library, even the paid ones

        • Not for something as trivial as activating free games. They're not even retail games, just promotional ones. You have to do some serious stuff to get banned, like use a stolen credit card. Activating a gift key that was fraudulently purchased may also get you banned. Even then, I think the ACCC might have a problem with them banning an entire account containing games that were legally purchased.

Imagine getting your steam account banned for a 4m game…

  • Seems like too much effort and risk for a couple of free games IMO

  • +1

Oh its not enough I come here for freebies, I have to search for them too???

  • +1

It seems like I already owned these games for some reasons?

Golden Axed, not to be confused with Golden Axe 😞 My 1st 8bit crush

You can find a full list of these types of free licences on SteamDB here.

The catch is that you need to:

    • Create an account by linking your Steam account.
    • You need to install the SteamDB extension.

You can also set it to display only free content for games that you own, which can show you free DLCs that you might not have even realised that you can download off the store, DLCs that are no longer available on the store front… And maybe even pre-order bonuses that you can't normally buy.

  • Thanks for sharing.

the steamdb links worked fine for me.

    • +2

its just a click of a button lol

    • +2

The Steamdb links worked fine if you didn't want to jump through hoops.

With this same attitude good luck with obtaining some subs deal via VPN and/or stacking up GPU when they went on sale. I'd say OP did a really good write-up and some other comments have also pointed out to other free games listed so as always, if you got nothing to say, you could choose to say nothing.
